Off-Road Diesel

Does off-road diesel provide the same lubrication as highway diesel? Should any additives be used with ORD to protect our tractors? Are there any disadvantages to using only ORD?

Thanks in advance for your input.

You've seen all the comments about dye being the only formulative difference. Cost is reduced by no road / DOT taxes, but is sometimes increased because it's much lower demand. If you have to have it delivered, that can drive cost up as well.

You should be using a good fuel treatment additive regardless of which type of diesel you're using. You want Cetane boost, stabiliziation, and anti-gel components from the additives.

Thank all. I'm going to start with the appropriate amount of PS in the summer and PS911 during the winter months in the Kubota. Thank you for the feedback.

If ORD is disappearing in some areas, I suspect it may be more of a "demand" issue than government limiting it. It may not be worth a station carrying it if there is not much purchase volume. But where there is enough demand from farmers and construction use, it will probably still be available. Check fuel and oil distributors in your area. Of course if you only need 20 gallons a year, it's not worth fooling with it.

As for biodiesel, I believe one of the issues is that it spoils if not used fast enough.

Be careful running PS911 regularly. Stick with just white bottle power service. For my Duramax, 911 is recommended only if you have gelled up. If you have a water separator in the filter, you want the water to stay separate. The alcohol in diesel911 emulsifiers it instead of separating it.

There is the problem. You can't get all in one bottle from what I've seen on the shelf.

Ya gotta buy 2 additives, for 1 tank of fuel. Now the price to fill up has increased dramatically.

So if one figures in the price of the 'government mandated', unusable fuel, plus the additives to make it usable.............wow

For long term storage I was told by the guys at MFA that since the sulfur was eliminated from diesel or either minimized drastically, that we are to add an additive to keep algae from growing if storing for several months. Perhaps this has already been discussed & I just missed it.....yes?

I must say, I now quite happy that I have an oil furnace and oil fired hot water heater. I use ORD/fuel oil fast enough that we never have a problem with it (refill the tank 4-5 times a year).

Algae only grows if there is water (moisture) in the fuel. I don't know that eliminating sulfur really has any affect on potential algae growth.

I run my pump through a combined water/dirt separator. I also keep the pickup tube off of the bottom of the tank to minimize water pickup.

Most diesel engines have a see through water separator in the fuel line. It's a good idea to look at it occasionally.

Some of the additives contain an algaecide.
