I did something similar with shim stock and it lasted over 100,000 miles and a few years until my brother finally junked it. It was still holding then.

That part about duct tape; that's good stuff. I have a question and I'm sure there a 100 versions. What do they call duct tape in West Virginia? ............. Chrome...

My brother in law had a Bolens lawn tractor that threw a rod through the side of the block. He patched the hole with a piece of sheet metal, RTV blue, and 6 screws. Ran fine for at least another 6 years.
