Hi:

Does anyone know of an offset rotary mower (as small as 48") that fits a 3pt hitch? I basically want it sticking out on the right side of the tractor and if it articulates up and down (anglewise) that would be great. I'd be putting it on a 3720 so I'll have 35pto hp. Bushhog makes a 60" one but it's a monster - Adjusts right and left but requires over 3000lbs 3pt lift capacity. It does tilt up and down.

If not, what's the capacity of some of the sickle bar cutters" Will they handle the same thickness as the rotary cutters?

Thanks,

It's been a fair number of years since I mowed hay with a sickle bar mower. What I remember about 'em was they could be "fickle".

If the sections weren't good and sharp and you were in the middle of some tall grass -- they'd plug up and trip the bar.

Or if the grass had a little dew on in the morning, well it might just be "pluggin' and trippin'" until things dried out a bit.

How about an offset flail mower?

I remember my dad had a 7' offset mower he pulled behind a ford 3600. It was used to mow under electric fencing and offset about a foot to the left if I recall correctly. I cannot remember the brand but I can check if needed.

The sickle mower we had was for cutting grass to bale and would not come close to cutting like a brushhog.

Made one last year, but still don't know how to post pics. It's small (24") to cut under t-post and around shrubs in the yard while making the first pass mowing or shreading when preffered. Spring loaded for the t-post and hyd. ext. to extend and retract for shrubs and small trees. Height thru unlevel land and cutting edge have been the problem and just kind of put it aside for now. Alot depend on what your use is.

A flail mower might work but that won't handle anything heavy (1-2") like a brush hog, right? If it will that might be an option.

Yup, a flail mower ain't the right tool for brush. Neither is a sickle mower.

Anything bigger around than your little finger (especially if it's dense or thick growth) will jam a sickle mower quicker than you can say the "belts smokin"!

If I had the available cash this is what I would get.

You can get brush or grass blades.
Good Luck, Marshall

How much are those boom mowers? They look sweet. I especially like the self contained hydraulics. 1" max might be a little low but those sure are nice.

I'd be using it for side bush hogging where I can't get under trees and I'd also like it to use to brush snowmobile trails expecially on the side where I can't get
to and/or the slope prevents me from driving the tractor over it.

I made mine out of an old riding lawnmower 3' deck with a single center hub. I put longer heavier blades on it along with a heavier center spinner. Mounted everything on a 6' piece of 3'angle iron so it reaches out about 4' to the right of the rear wheels on the 3pth and drives from the PTO. Had to play with belts and pulleys till I got it right but it will do 1"maple and birch shrubs, although sometimes you have to ease into them. I do about 5miles of bush roads at the hunt camp each year. The first year is the worst and I have to carry a file to sharpen the blades now and then. They are just 3/8"mild steel so its not a big job by hand. Make sure that the bolts holding the blade sections are good quality and have lockwire or something on them. Mine stick out about 3" beyond the mower housing so they have no real guard when running....

That's an ambitious project but a good idea. In my case I have a 30" DR Field and brush mower that'll handle 2-1/2 thick stuff pretty well for hand stuff but I'm walking behind that. The deck does come right off though and I suppose with a little trickery and welding that I could mount the 30" deck offset and power it off the PTO.

Hmmm, I'll have to think about that but it might work.
