Howdy Friends,

I hope this finds you all well!

L2850 owner here.

My engine just started pushing oil out of the vent tube that comes out of the top of the engine. I read that it is from excess oil and I had just added a bit (1/2 quart) about 30 minutes before since the oil light started to flicker.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for ny help!

Oil should be checked with the dipstick, and not when or wait until the oil light comes on. The oil light may be just a bad connection at the terminal/sending unit. Unless the light went out when you added the oil?

So first what's the dipstick say? If full, then drain and change the oil and filter - start fresh. Then see if its still blowing oil, and if so, could be valve blowby and usually it's hard to start etc.

Never add oil based on oil pressure light flickering. Use the dipstick to determine oil level.

If the oil pressure light is flickering, either your oil is diluted, the oil pump is fubar, or the oil pressure switch is defective. I would start with the oil pressure switch.

Super appreciate this.

Further developments:

Checked the oil, came puking out. Whoops. Draining and refilling. What is the recommended type and quantity.

So maybe the flickering light? What causes it to do that and what is there to be done?

Sorry for all of the questions, but really am thankful.

I’m just thinking out loud but if you had way to much oil and the light is flickering I’d guess your getting fuel in the oil. Possibly coming from the injection pump but other possibilities.

It takes 9.4 quarts with the oil filter. So if you just drain the oil and don't replace the filter put in at least 8.5 quarts and check the oil via dipstick before you start it and add more until it's full via dipstick.

Here;s a link to another post here on TBN about Oil out of the breather tube for reference. https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/threads/l2850-leak.137156/

In this case I believe it was the hydraulic pump seal allowing oil into the engine.

See what the old oil looks like - if it thin and smells like diesel fuel, then dodge man is on the right path, and if its thin doesn't smell of diesel fuel then it may be the hyd pump seal.

Also check the hydraulic oil level - it may be a sight glass or a stick not sure on that model. If's its really low then that could point to a pump seal too.

It's very important to use oil rated for diesel service. Check recommended weight.

Agreed, and Rotella 15-40 is what I use, but Worcester may want to put in 2 gal of lower cost oil until he figures out where the excess fluid is coming from.

But it;s not a huge cost delta, maybe 15$ to put in a good diesel rated oil.
