oil filter canister

Hi all!! New on here. I just bought a 1970 MF135 with a 3 cyl Perkins gas engine and I thought I'd change the oil before I used it too much. Anyway to my surprise, I found the oil filter was installed wrong. The spring was upside down and stuck inside the filter. I can't find a diagram which shows the correct way to install the filter inside the canister. I think I figured it out but not completely sure of myself. I believe the previous owner didn't install a washer on top of the spring. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

And there's a metal washer with a rubber gasket on it at the bottom of the canister.

Spring goes in bottom of canister then the filter...

THere is this option also...

Which way does the spring go? Cone up or cone down and shouldn't there be a washer on top of the spring to make the filter spring loaded when installing? I am going to switch to the conversion kit later but it takes so long for parts to be delivered up.

Morning again. The oil pressure idiot gauge showed high before I changed the oil and it still shows high after putting the filter in the right way and changing the oil. Does any one know what the spring loaded ball in the oil filter head does? It's not seized. Is this the pressure relief ball? Do I need to remove the pan to get at the oil pump? I'm going to swap out the oil pressure gauge first before taking the pan off. Has anybody done a flush on the oil system and does it work? P.S. I've ordered the spin-on conversion kit. Thank you.
