So, I could see that the rear "lip" was going to need some support, so I added a little piece of angle iron

I didn't like how the tank would slam back and forth when opening and closing, so I dug a couple of old jeep shocks out from the shed to see what I could come up with. Idealy I'd have one mounted under the center... but with having lowered the frame it doesn't give me alot of room. This was just for mock up as they need new bushings and proper sized bolts.

Two problems became obvious right away; I wanted the shock to limit the dump once fully compressed... the shock body contacts the axle before this happens. That and the shock is difficult to extend, and easy to retract. The opposite of what I'd like it to do. Now, perhaps these are just wore... not sure if it's worth spending $100 on a new pair to find out. A shorter pair could move one of the mounting points and avoid contact with the axle.... hmmm.

Hey, just stumbled on your newest project. Looking good!

How about a piece of rubber where the frames come together?

The geometry doesn't look good for the shocks. My Polaris Ranger uses a gas strut on the dump bed.

I've thought about using truck bump stops at the back to stop it going passed 65deg or so... or using limit straps at the front. I think the bump stops would stress the hinges alot once they made contact... so that's out. I did buy the straps, just never mocked them up yet. They'd also take alot of force once taught. The though of the shocks is just to take the jarring out of slamming open and closed.

I know the geometry sucks. Ideal would be upright at the front... which could be a possibility if I want to mount the tops of the shocks on the tank... suppose that wouldn't be so bad. They look much cooler this way though ;)

Ok, so I've kind of slacked off this passed week or so... had yet another flue... ah the joys of having a child in daycare.

Spent a whopping $30 on new shock bushings and galvanized (bad choice I realized after the fact) hardware.

Figured out a decent way to mount the shock(s)

test fit went well

Final (hopefully) disasembly

...and got as far as I could with the primer I had. LOL

Looking good! Are you only going to have a shock on one side?

Thanks! At first I planned to put both... but the one provides plenty of resistance... and I put it on that side because with the SXS I'll be getting out and dumping on that side. I'm a little worried using it as the dump stop may be bad... especially with a full load swinging back... but I've got the other as a spare... and I may scrounge up a couple more hinges so the twisting force isn't an issue. This kind of axes the idea that I'd be able to dump from the driver's seat. It does require a fair amount of force to get it started.

Well this is my least favorite part of my projects, just because it takes forever... prime, dry for a day, flip, prime, dry for a day, paint, dry for a day.... well you get the idea.

My little helper made it a little more fun... and she seemed to enjoy it alot.

she only got a little on her forearms. :)

Clever painting smock.

Hmmm. If it takes a lot of force to get it started up, then I guess my thought that the cylinder could eventually be replaced with a hydraulic or electric dump cylinder wouldn't work.

I think they would work, they put out much more force than human arms. :D

It takes alot of force BECAUSE of the shock... that's the bad part. The good part is that is slows the dump action once it gets going instead of slamming back.

Well she's all painted

Filled it to about 2/3. 100 round shovel fulls.

It didn't go well at all. First off the little "V" I put behind the hitch was acting as a ramp on stumps and rock and lifting the hitch right off the ball. I cut it off and went for a 2nd load. When I dumped it the hitch came right off the ball... this was after tightening the hitch... but just a half turn of the nut. I'll tighten it some more. Also, the load doesn't slide out. There's too much radius of the tank left. I hoped it wouldn't come to this, but I'll have to cut some out and put it on hinges. I kept what I cut off, so I could put some back and make it a little higher... though I think I'm at the limit for the fourwheeler I'm using.

How much more dump angle can you get if you take off the shock?

90deg, but that's not the problem. I'm at 65deg which is way more then most factory dump trailers. I thought I may have to cut in a small tailgate during initial design/ build. I just hope the 2" vertical lips don't hold up the material... I'll start with just cutting out the little "gussets" above the angle iron and seeing if that helps.
