Where did you get the bearings and coulters? I have a AC 2 row planter and was thinking about rebuilding it. Thanks.

The central bearing that the chain and pinion gear revolves around was bought at Schmidt and sons (800) 281-2164, part # 832768M1, $9.42, the coulters came from Valu-bilt, B45-1167, $34.37, and the disc openers assemblies, # B45-3194, $72.84, which included everything (bearings, washers and bolts) pre assembled. The bearings for the coulters were from Shoups (800) 627-6137. Cones: L44649 and LM11749 (about $4.50 ea) and cups: L44610, LM11710 ($6.00) and seals 906245 ($7.30). I also bought some new springs from a spring manufacturer, and some other misc. parts. If you need more info, let me know. Hope this helps.

While I am here, these are the latest pix. I almost have the units complete and am mounting them on the reassembled frame. I am having second thoughts about making this a no till, as it really adds to the weight and makes the assembly much harder in terms of handling the weight. My tractor is not on site nor do I have a forklift, so its tough. But I have gone this far, so I think I will go ahead and use both tool bars and install the three coulters. I made the spacing 22", which I hope will work for corn and soybeans (at least well enough for plots) I can always change it. I cut my main frames at 8' width. I am still deciding how to make the three point attachment assembly. I am trying not to weld onto the frame as everything else is bolted on and I have plenty of U bolts and backing plates left over. Sorry bout the rotated pictures. They were upright in my file but transfered rotated and I could not figure how to correct. Just tilt your head!

For food plots row spacing should not matter too much. Just make sure the population per acre is right for your growing location.

Population is the number of plants per acre. It will be determined by the number of cells in the plates used to plant with, row width, and the speed the plates are driven. Higher cell counts and faster plate drive speeds will increase population. Plate drive speed is not ground speed. It is the result of the gear on the planter that drives the plate. Seeds plates were developed for a particular seed corn size. For greatest production yeilds, the particular seed needs to be spaced between plant and row so each individual plant has optimal growing conditions. You'll need to find the plate that most closely matches the seed you'll be planting. Then you can get 16 or 24 cell plates for that particular seed, and recommended population. The plates that came with your planter, may or may not work for the seed you want to plant. There are quite a few on ebay right now. Here is a page from the JD 71 Flexi planter manual in regards to population. Population is a factor of row spacing and in-row (seed) spacing. Great job on those planters BTW. You have an amazing shop there.

Thanks for the info and complements. My " shop" is really not what it appears. This is an old textile machinery warehouse thats been long out of service as our industry long ago moved to china This building is huge and owner rents out space for boats, motor homes, etc. I keep my truck and trailers there and have set up a small shop with a welder/ genny, drill press, torch, band saw, etc. It is ideal for that and gives me a place to escape. Nobody really uses it like i do as most people just park stuff there. Its not heated or cooled and security is not ideal but it does give me a place to work on projects like this

here is an update on progress. I fabricated a 3 point hitch attachment system as this was originally a pull type. I also made a "stand" with casters so I can move this around my shop, and which will double as a stand when I "park" this at my shed. This allows me to turn the rear wheel and try out the drive train and seed drop. Most of this I made from left over steel from the disassembly or scrap plate. Got to practice my welding skills (which are very limited!) THe spacing is about 28", as with three rows, the outside will be in my tire tracks regardless of spacing. I may cut the frame a little narrower (it's 8' now from the original 10') just to make it a little more manueverable.
