Generator Onan 25kw Generator

I found a steal of a deal. One 25kw Onan PTO generator for a dollar. It is an older model but if it works it is definitely worth travelling the 700km to pick it up. My question is, I have a 23hp BX25 Kubota and would like to know if I can run this generator at ~ 10kw with my machine without any problems. Thanks in advance for your valuable input. :thumbsup:

Yes you could spin 10kw worth easy. The real question is who/why would someone give it away for $1, and is it single phase 25kw?

Single phase 100amp. I am guessing it is circa ~1970

It is an estate sale and the tenant needs to move and is looking to liquidate everything fast. I am not sure if it actually works and will not know until I hook it up and try it. In order to do that, I need it here. If it works, I may be able to trade it for a smaller unit.

It will work my only suggestion is to change out the breaker on the generator to be more in line with your tractor's output other wise you will stall out the tractor if it does go to full load.

You could put the correct sized breaker in the transfer switch too that might be easier.

Using the accepted formula 2hp per kw, you will get 1KW for every 2 PTO HP. So if you have 20 PTO hp yes.

There is some thoughts on running a larger genny at lower capacity, It's about the fly wheel effect, spinning mass staying in motion. Better to take 10 KW out of a genny with higher capacity than squeeze 10 kw out of a genny rated for 10 kw max. There may be a trade off though taking less than half it's capacity, taking up HP to spin it.

Most pto gen's are 540rpm in with a gear box on them to get the gen to speed 1800 for 4 pole or 3600 2 pole

I think a BX model is a little light for it. I see on northern tool supply a 27KW PTO generator for tractors of 48HP and up.

I have Generac PTO 25 and a Ford 1720 with 23 pto hp and my tractor runs it fine and powers the whole house including the 5500 watt dryer, well, fridge, freezer & any other device at the same time.
As was said the KW produced is dependent on the pto hp of your tractor which in your case will be 8 to 10 kw.
The flywheel effect will also help with surge from larger loads such as deep well pumps, & other motors.
This will be a great back-up and you will be able to power the whole house with little or no restrictions on electrical load.

If it can be fixed up at a low enough cost it would be a bargain. I wouldn't over think this too long or someone else will have it. Free items like this will go fast.

When you guys are connecting these units to earth grounded circuits are you making a earth ground at the generator?

I'm probably starting a war here, but a buddy I grew up with was electrocuted by a PTO generator that went hot through the tractor and I have called these things widow makers ever since.

The reason I said that was because Onan makes PTO generators to be mounted on truck chassis (usually fire apparatus).

You are correct it needs to be grounded to the house ground to prevent electrocution and proper operation and protection of the house electrical system.
There should be a ground lug on the generator frame for this purpose. I attached a 20 ft heavy guage ground cable and clamp to mine for grounding purposes.
