It is called downgrading, yes, downgrading since it WAS a group 4 (not a group3) a few years ago. It was not due to “competing” etc. It was due to the group 4 not making enough money. Maybe I am wrong but that is from what I have read and talked with other dealers. So now keep the same label (aka synthetic) and make more $$$$.
Is it still a good oil, sure but not cost effective by any means. Yes, it is mostly a quick lube oil and getting people to start using Amsoil but look at the price. It is within a small percent (real small) to a group4 (ASL and so on) etc. Then again what is using their XL line getting you? You can only go “up to” 7,500 miles. Heck, you can do that with a good group 2 oil.
I like Amsoil but their “tests” are biased and most times do not even compare the same weights of the same oil in there tests (same one too). Also when did they EVER test against Redline, Motul, Mobil EP……Nevermind the famous 4-ball deal.
To close, they are in a “fight” since right off the start you need to “find” a dealer to buy the oil. Narrow market. How about not many manufactures liking “extended drains either”. I like their oils etc and have used them and still do in some apps; however, once you try some other oils/product and use UOA, you can get the same outcome with less initial and overall costs.
