Today we have a public Holiday (in Victoria, bottom right hand corner) for a football game.
Australian Rules where two groups of Neanderthals dressed in shorts and sleeveless shirts throw, run with and sometimes kick a ball from one end of a field to the the other.
The object is see how much blood you can draw, bones you can break while on this mission, hospitalisation is a bonus, if you get to the end of this field and get the ball between the two posts you win as this called a goal, however, if you just miss there are two outer posts and if it falls between these you get a point.
This saves delicate egos for near misses.
At the end of the game which is broken into quarters the numbers of points are tallied up and a winner is declared.
At the halfway time patriotism is shown as a guest singer from overseas comes on and sings our National Anthem.
The holiday is today so you can go out and stock up on beer and other essentials to watch the game which is not until tomorrow.
After all of this the nation falls into a state of depression until it all starts again in about 6 months, this break is to allow all injuries to heal for when it starts again.
The TV stations then spend 3 months conducting post mortems on what went wrong then the next 3 months on how they are going to do it next time.
Some manage this depression by watching cricket instead.

I have no idea what you are speaking of, but it sounds crazy. I just tried to watch the Rugby world cup, and have no idea how that works either. I think our American football is a joke, too slow and too boring. Cricket is ... shoot, I don't know what it is. Give me European soccer every day, now there's a sport to get excited about.

Only in Australia? Viewed through the lens of time, place and event, we have a lot in common:

But do you get a holiday for it?
And in another 6 weeks or so we get another one for a horse race.
No wonder we are called the land of the long weekend.

I've watched soccer and rugby. Soccer rules/play is understandable. Rugby - it's just a blood sport. I don't know that I've ever seen an Australian rules football game. Sounds like Rugby to me.

I watch American football - NCAA & NFL. However - it's become a game with three competitors. Offense, defense & umpires.

Officially no, but we do have the Stupor Bowl where everyone without a brain stops their world, advertisers spend stupid money for a few seconds of time and ...... well, you get the drift.

Then there's that Derby thing in KY that's almost as bad and parades some horribly gaudy hats.

Remember, fan is short for fanatic.
Some take it to a different level than others.

Soccer,

No thanks,

If I wanted to watch somebody struggle to score for 90 minutes, I would take my friends to the bar.

They should call it "Flopper", not soccer.

Bunch of panty wearing babies.

It's been wonderful for my Grandkids. It's a sport where a skinny little white boy can compete...and it actually requires them to develop some physical skills. I like watching the little one playing soccer; my Grand daughter was quite good.

Rugby is more like running wrestling.

Here in England, football, or soccer as the guys in the USA call it, gets a lot of folk excited. Me I don`t get it, 22 over paid men running after a bag of wind is not my sort of sport. Now rugby, or especially out inter forces rugby final, that does get a lot of doctors worried.

That’s funny. I hope they get a special seating area. I’d hate to have the seat behind one of those ladies.

Love Oz. Been there all over except for the NW area north of Perth and west of Darwin. Especially loved Tassie. Been to the various parts about 6 times, as we could see it to/from Singapore and from Singapore living there. Never appreciated either rugby nor soccer. Soccer, I agree with some, is like running wrestling and a little bit like watching grass grow.

My game is American football. Knew nothing about it until my freshman year at OU where it was Bud Wilkinson's last year. Ole Bud set the NCAA record for # games won in a row back in the mid 50s. I came along in 1960/61.

Ralph

There are two Rugby games, League and Union although I have no idea which is which but it is said that one is a game for gentlemen who want to act like thugs and the other is a game for thugs who want to act like gentlemen.
I knew one person who played one of them and broken teeth, fingers etc were almost accepted and one of our less illustrious players was known for sliding his finger up opposition rectums during the scrum, very disconcerting and most certainly would put me off wanting to play although I suspect some would enjoy....
I thimk you may be confusing soccer with rugby but I watched an American football game once, everyone converged on the ball, one man got it and ran about three steps and stopped and held it high, the crowd stood up and cheered, I missed something and have no idea what????

News reports are talking about Koala casualties in AUS Wildfires.

News reports mention mansion losses in US wildfires. Rarely do we see a word about wildlife affected.

Rarely do we see a word about wildlife affected.

I saw it last night and they talked about Arnie having to be evacuated.
Next week is the Melbourne Cup and a holiday, I am working for 4 hours that day at 2.5 times my normal rate which will pay me almost enough to buy an aftermarket backhoe (which I don't want), it is a strange world.
