WOW! That's one fine looking barn it's as beautiful as a new speckled pup. I'm doing a 32x40 and am already wishing I had gone a little bigger. Mine is not going to be a working barn though (animals that is) but more a work shop. A place to spend the rest of my life tinkering with projects and maybe even somehow figure out a way to make a few bucks along the way.

I am at the point where I thinking about electric service. When I built my house I put a 400 amp service in knowing that one day I would build a workshop and I could split it and send 200 amps out to the shed. I'm wondering now if that will be enough because things have changed since then and now I am in to powder coating and also have a mill, a lathe, and also three welders welders along with all sorts of other goodies. Of-course there will probably never be a time that all this stuff is all running at the same time but it is likely that at least one oven is working and possibly a mill, lathe or welder would be at the same time.

I've been looking at the wire prices and now wish I had put this building closer to the house because it is likely that the feed wire is going to cost as much as the wood it took to gut the building under roof. I have not measured the distance but I'm thinking it is around 250' from the house to the barn and it will be buried also.

Anyway, Great job......you have something that should make you proud for at least a hundred years or so and the grand kids will have something to brag about for some time after that.

Part 9, These are pics of the Tack Room with all the exterior painted and the ceder trim done on the front. New bronze colored Socket Covers, Switch covers and Door Handle to match the Lamp. On the pics taken at an angle you can see the two finished stalls on both sides of the Tack Room. Just finished the second stall and I have 3 more stalls left to paint and they will be done.

I also have the top of the Tack Room insulated with R19 insulation and capped off with OSB on the top. I didn't bother taking any pictures of the top as it is pretty plain looking, nothing fancy there. I put the cover panel on the Breaker Box and got the phone line routed to the Tack Room. Then mounted the outside weather gauge thing on the left Tack Room wall. It is the round thing on the wall in the pics.

I will probably be building the rest of the inner walls of the Tack Room tomorrow then we will be back to painting on both the inner Tack Room walls and the other stalls. I will be Painting the exterior of the Back Stall Dutch Doors with the red and white theme to match the exterior of the barn. That will be coming up on the next real good day we have.

These pictures are ok but they were taken at night so they are not as clear as I wanted. I will most likely add them again later when I get some good daylight pics. Anyway, here you all go, and enjoy! More to come later as we are making good progress. :D

USNative,

I am really enjoying watching the progress of your barn/horse stable and wanted to say that you continue to do a bang up job.

You may have said something before, but if you did, I missed it. I have been wondering what you used for the bars in the see through area of the stalls. Is that standard metal pipe or some special material for horse stalls? we are bovine cattle people so I was merely wondering if something special was used in the horse stalls.

My oldest son and his family are the horse people in our family, but my only involvement with the horses is pretty much restricted to watching the ridding competions and the practice sessions. I have been around them enough to know that horses require significantly different facilities and care than beef and dairy cattle.

Keep up you fine job. I will be watching for the next report.

Actually the Dutch Doors and Stall Bar Panels were ordered online from a place called Woodstar Products. They have been around since 1977 and they sell pre made stall kits and other equine stuff. The bars are a hollow steel but man are they strong! My friend layed one on a block and stomped on it to try to get it to bend and it would not bend at all. He said they are hardened steel. The wood they are made with is Southern Yellow Pine. They are reasonably priced and are designed pretty good. Here is the link to Woodstar Products web site if you would like to check em' out. Thanks for your complements and your interest in our project North West Farmer. I noticed you are from Oregon, so am I. I grew up in the Eugene area in a little town called Creswell. You probably know of it. Moved to Montana about 12 years ago. Though I love Montana I do love Oregon as well and I miss it at times. My mom still lives in Eastern Oregon. My father loved Oregon (bless his soul) but I lost him in January of this year.

Thanks.

USNative,

I am definitely very aware of Creswell Oregon.

A close friend of mine, that is also a retired fireman like myself, is presently in the process of moving to Montana. Over the last few years, his wife and childern have been experiencing more and more problems with environmental allergies. They made a six month trial stay in Montana and they were completely free of allergy problems.

This region is one of the major places in this country where nursery stock is produced. Also, a large number of new people have moved to this area and many of them have brought their plants with them. These two things have resulted in many folks developing allergy problems and numerous new plant deseases and/or items are directly competitive with our crops and native plants. These issues are giving those of us involved in farming fits.

Update! We have made more good progress on our barn today. I worked a couple of hours on finishing the phone connection and we now have phone in the Tack Room. :D

All finished burying the underground lines after I got the phone connection finished. Man it's good to have that done!

I also added the Tack Room sign over the door of the Tack Room and added horseshoes to the upper corners and middle above the new sign over the door.

I raked up the big rocks and leveled the ground out in one of the finished stalls and then added the straw to the floor of it. Then added our hay and water tubs into that stall. It is now completely ready .

I also installed black rubber 4" strips over tops of stall walls to prevent any chewing. I used metal strips on my last barn and they worked great but I decided to try the rubber this time. I hope it works but if not I will go back to the metal strips.

I am planning to finish building the inner walls of the Tack Room and getting more of the painting done on the stalls next. I am brush painting the stalls which is very time consuming and tedious but the results make it well worth it after its done.

We are getting pretty close to having it done now but we still have a ways to go. All the major work is pretty much done. I have enjoyed sharing our project with you all and I appreciate all of your comments. I will be posting up more pics very soon, so stay tuned guys. ;)

I like the inside hydrant... I'm still debating on that. Since I will be installing a fountain for the horses, I'm thinking my hydrant will get more use from the outside. Washing trailers etc, and just in case the fountain goes down, run a hose to a tank.

Are you putting heat in the tack room..?? In my old one here, I put in a baseboard heater. Don't use it much, other than on real cold days when cleaning stalls, or the farrier is here, and need a quick warm up.

I have a outside hydrant close to the end corner of the barn and it is shown in a picture on post#31. We put that one in the same time as the one inside the barn. Yes, the Tack Room has a 220v heater with 3000 watts it is shown on post#32 on one of those pictures.

Thanks.

USNative'

You have been hard at it. I looked at the Woodstar Products site and they do manufacture some good looking horse facility items.

I looks like you will have a real good shot at getting your project completed before winter really sets in. All of us here at our farm in Oregon continue to be impressed with your results to this point.

We are working hard at completing the prep work for a new hazlenut orchard that we will be planting in March, so we are making a push here as well to have all the land leveling, spraying and covercrop planted prior the the arrival of our winter rains.

Keep up the good work on your horse barn. Will try to put together group of pictures on what is involved in establishing a hazlenut orchard here in our area. My wife took the cameras and video equipment with her on her annual treck back to central New York state to visit relatives on her side of the family. Will have to wait for her return to put together some pictures. In the mean time, I get to stay home and babysit the farm, the projects, chores and liveststock. A new Simental bull calf arrived on Wednesday adding to our farm family. Overall I strongly favor the Simentals, well behaved, growthy, good herd animals and great eaters. Can't ask for more than that.

Keep the project going and the pictures coming.

Yeah, I think I can get it done, at least I will have the most important things done on it. :D

I was going to finish the interior of the tack room today but it was a very good day to paint so I decided to get started on the outer back dutch doors for the stalls. I was able to get a good coat of Primer on all 5 sets of doors and I will probably be potting a second coat on it with primer tomorrow. They will look great when we are done with em' and I will of course post pics when they are done as well.

I took these pics of the Tack Room last night. These are showing the horseshoes and the "Tack Room" sign that we bought for it. The Tack Room is pretty much done now on the outside and it won't be long and til I finish building the rest of the walls on the inside. We will be painting the inside of the Tack Room a Beige color. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of the finished Tack Room , Enjoy. :)

More coming later!
