Overpowered, overpriced new cars

Bird, I remember reading about those economy runs but it always baffled me why so much importance was paid to them because even today, how many people buy a car based on fuel economy as compared to other makes. I have never purchased any new or used vehicle with gas mileage as a factor in my choice.

In some governmental entities, employees are paid a set amount for every mile they drive on official business. Most of the vehicles I bought while I was working were purchased for their fuel economy.

I have an 03' Mercedes AMG E55 Rentech in the shop now for some code reading for a body shop and its got a 5.5l supercharged v8.

Its a beautiful car it's all black and chrome and has these huge disc brakes showing thru the AMG signature wheels and I believe this car actually needs them.

It's definitely a 4 dr highway cruiser/sleeper unless you happen to catch the Kompressor badge on the fenders or can read the AMG on all the chrome parts. All you would see is the tail lights quickly disappearing out of sight and not understand what happened.

Its quick it just sets you back real hard in the seat and gets it on fact with the traction control on it was still trying to spin the rear tires at 80 mph when the traction control would let loose of the throttle for a split second at a time. We turned the traction control off and did a 20 mph rolling start and I backed off @ 125 just a few seconds later and it was still setting us firmly back in the seats its a very impressive car.

This thing is fast real fast I have no idea about the specs on it cost wise or HP (edit: just searched its 469 hp and cost $79 grand) but the owner said he drove it out to the drag strip last summer and casually went thru @ 12.7 114 mph and drove back home a/c on driving in luxury. I read where these will run low 12's high 11's stock and I dont doubt it a bit.

Yeah they don't look like rocket ships on wheels so buckle up it is an amazing ride! He has very good taste in cars also btw.

All it takes is a bump in gas prices and people start looking at mpg...

MPG was a factor in my last couple of truck purchases. Not the top factor but in the top three. The truck had to have a crew cab to haul the family, an eight foot bed to haul stuff, and decent MPG.

My normal 72 mile round trip the truck gives a bit over 22 mpg during the summer and down to 20mpg during the winter. Hand calculated not based on the LieOMeter computer in the truck.

Pretty danged good for a F350 4x4. :laughing: Do not know what I will do when I run this thing into the ground in another 20 years. They do NOT build them like this anymore.
