they open themselves up for a huge backlash for providing a free service for their customers. They are, in fact making a political decision, not a business decision. In business, it is a very dangerous precedent to make public political decisions. So, I strongly disagree with you that it is a "business decision", and I also disagree with you and I feel it is a poor decision, and not a "good one".

Huge backlash??? That's agood one! :D One guy on a gun auction site is not a huge backlash. Neither are ten guys on a tractor board. Neither is the total NRA membership cause they don't eat no bagles anyway... it sounds french and they can't eat cream cheese 'cause their cholestrol is too high!

But seriously, it all boils down to making money for the bread place. That is a business decision, pure and simple. They don't want to take the chance of losing business(money) by offending their customers. They want their customers to come in and hand them their money as often as possible. So they encourage customers to come in, get a bite to eat, check their e-mail, then get out of there so they don't consume table space or keep getting free pop refills. They don't want people in there surfing the net after they are done eating. They want them to go away. The welcome, homey atmosphere is all a ruse to get you in and out as quickly as possible without making it feel like they are asking you to leave. That's the genious of it. You feel like it is your neighborhood place, but they really want you to go away as soon as you stuff that last little bit of bread in your cheeks!!!! ;)

Why do people jump to the conclusion that it's a political decision?

Because they do not listen to the "Voices of Reason" -- they prefer having tunnel vision.

People like MossRoad and I, who deal with this day in and day out, know what it takes to manage a product like SmartFilter in a large corporation. Why do people jump to the conclusion that it's a political decision?

Well, good golly, heavens forbid that I disagree with the mighty MikePA. I'm sure the wise sages like "MossRoad and I" know it all. You can make all the software you want, but when a business makes a decision that their people/customers cannot see things that are very well accepted by the general public, and that is not ****, it is a political decision. If you cannot opt as to what you want filtered and what you don't want filtered, the software is trash and not worth using. Sorry, but I don't agree with you even a tiny bit on this issue. Hopefully I can live through the day with such ignorance and the unacceptable arrogance to disagree with MikePA.

You obviously didn't read my initial post on this. The software CAN filter specific web sites. That's not the issue. The issue is MANAGING all the exceptions to what the category blocks by default. For example, allow access to gun auctions but not allow access to sites that provide instructions for making explosives.

When you're not the expert, or someone disagrees with you, you start tossing out personal attacks. Nice.

As Mike said, you CAN select what you want filtered. So go out and buy the best software possible. Then do a google search for "gun". Here's what you get...

Results 1 - 10 of about 137,000,000 for gun

Now hire some kid to check those one hundred thirtyseven million websites for you one at a time and go for it. See what I'm getting at? It ain't practical from a business standpoint.

Narrow down your search to "gun auction".
Results 1 - 10 of about 2,730,000 for gun auction

The kid still can't keep up. Narrow it some more.

Results 1 - 10 of about 520,000 for gun auction not ****

The kid should have it done by the time he outgrows acne.

Was it a personal attack or just a sarcastic retort offering a disagreement of opinion?
