<font color="brown"> No, it don't have to be in neutral to run without you being in the seat; but even it did I would still advise you to never put the tractor in neutral on a hill.
Putting it in neutral on a grade is a good way for the tractor to get away from you. On a hill always leave it in gear and set the parking brake tight. To be on the safe side you could even chock the wheels.
If the engine did stop you can always restart it when you go to move the tractor.
Again don't put it in neutral first when you go to restart the motor or it will roll away again just like it did before for you.
Make sure the parking brake is firmly set then shift to neutral hit the key immediately upon shifting to neutral and shift back into gear as soon as the motor starts. Don't ply around with trying to set engine rpm or fool around with any other levers before shifting back into gear.
The object is to shorten the length of time in neutral as much as possible to get the transmission back into gear as soon as possible so the brakes will hold the tractor in place.
Do not release the parking brake before shifting back into gear. </font>

Thanks for the advice. However, I'm certain my BX 2230 shuts off if I leave the seat while in gear (PTO on or off). Unless there's a way around it, I'll have to try something different. I had a JD GX345 that allowed me to leave the seat and it also held on the same slope with no problem. <font color="black"> </font>

1* I'm not so sure you're sure about this = Have you tried getting off the tractor while its' in gear to see if the engine stops???
I get off my BX23 with it in gear a lot and the engine keeps right on running.
I can tell you one thing if you're on a slope and put the tractor in neutral and don't have the brake set good and tight it will take off down the hill.

Nope. I just went outside to check it out. The engine shut off when I left the seat w/o PTO in "tortoise" and "hare". As for your advice about neutral on a slope, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm trying to avoid that, but the engine shuts off if I'm not in neutral. Is this a unique problem or are others with 2230s experiencing the same thing?

This may be apples and oranges I have a BX 23 so things may be different. There is no tortoise and hare On the PTO clutch lever. The tortoise and hare are on the Range gear shift lever. The PTO lever is on the other side. I think you possibly have the rear PTO on and don't know it. Check the manual. I picked up my manual and read it several days before the tractor was delivered. Read it cover to cover at least twice and I still look at it frequently.

Perhaps I was unclear. The PTO is in middle-only setting. The gear lever on the opposite side of the tractor has a tortoise and hare. The PTO was not engaged. In both gear settings the tractor stalled when I left the seat.

The PTO has 2 levers. The selector (one with the 3 positions rear, mid or both) the other turns the PTO on and off I thought that you might have the mid PTO off, the rear PTO on and the PTO clutch engaged. This would explain the problem. I know If I bump the 3 point selector on my BX23 with the back hoe installed alkinds of funny things happen to the FEL. (Just a for instance that happened to me that made me scratch my head for a few minutes)
