Perils of retirement

Between marriages I was a bachelor for 8 years. I scraped off the leftover food on the plates before putting them in the dishwasher, never scrubbed them, rarely rinsed them. Dishes came out fine.

Heaven forbid if that's done now!!!! Those dishes MUST be hand washed BEFORE going into the dishwasher!!!!!! To me that's like handwashing your clothes before putting them in the clothes washer...... :confused3: :D

I put this right beside her leaving my tool cabinet drawers open after removing a tool!!!!! :D

I am the dishwasher guy here Richard. I turn them upside down over the sink, and anything that falls off and can go in the garbage disposal can fall in there. I don't pre-wash them, that defeats the purpose of the dishwasher. Besides the dishwasher has a small food grinder in it too, and the small particles get washed off, and go thru the grinder before going down the drain to the main food waste disposal. There just isn't any good reason to pre-wash dishes. They come come out sparkling clean as is. It did take me a while to learn how to load the dishwasher, and the wife critiqued my technique more than once. But I did learn. Heck I even remember to fill the rinse-aide dispenser (well, when the light comes on :))

Since I am on septic, no garbage disposal, therefor everything gets a prewash. Grinder or not via the dishwasher. I figured, less in the tank by any means is better.

I think my wife prewashes them, at least rinses them. I NEVER use the dishwasher; just prefer to wash and dry them by hand. Our first 2 dishwashers were Gaffers & Sattler. I rebuilt that first sorry piece of junk twice, and also rebuilt my sister's of the same brand, and one neighbor's. Then we had a Maytag that lasted a short time and wasn't worth the cost of parts to fix it. I'll have to admit that the KitchenAid we now have was in this house when we bought it 12 years ago and is still working, but that's one appliance I would never buy or want in my house. Naturally my wife disagrees.

Proper loading of a dishwasher has a large impact on the quality of the results!!!!

This from the guy that as a bachelor did a load of laundry when the dirty clothes basket was full. Never sorted. Just dumped it all in. :D

I think ours is a Maytag. Purchased in 1999. Has never required any service. Is a bit noisy compared to new ones now, but works great. If it quits today, it will get replaced today, tomorrow at the latest, depending on the hour of it's demise. :)

We had a dishwasher in the house we built in Anchorage. What a horrid, terrible mistake. It worked for a while and then it didn't. Finally, we ripped it out and put cabinets in the vacant hole.

Soooo..... there was no disagreement - - when we built our house here - NO dishwasher.

And as far as dirty clothes - I've never sorted anything. Most everything I own/wear is medium grey anyway. Socks, underwear, T-shirts, sweat shirts - blue jeans and Carhart pants being the exception. All for one, one for all.

Hahahaha. I'm not allowed in the kitchen very often because I do everything wrong. In 66 years, I have never managed to load the dishwasher properly and probably never will. Not allowed to use a dish drainer either because I probably didn't hand wash them correctly. sigh...

Yes, a few strategic messups can get you banned from certain chores.

SWMBO is the Queen of the Laundry. I've a few basic rules - one is that I only know 5 "colors" - red, blue, green, white and black. I was a mapper and use the Five color theorem. SWMBO is part artist and can divide up a color chart into a thousand named colors. She also will divide up a pile of laundry into a dozen different colors, many which I cannot tell apart.
Early on I proved my mastery of the laundry by putting a slightly red T shirt in with mostly whites. Result a load of slightly pink underwear. I still need to do that once every four years (about every anniversary) in order to remain banned from the laundry room.

As of now she doesn't read TBN, so hopefully I'm safe.

Truth be told...Being banned from certain chores could be seen as an end run at goal. The only time I am a perfectionist is when someone else is doing the job. The sweet wife says her way is the right way...so do it right! I just don't think I have the aptitude to get it done.

To me a dishwasher is a useless appliance that is just looking for a way to give you trouble.

Our current dishwasher is a portable unit that is utilized as a hat rack...

As far as retirement I hope we have the health to travel a bit...
My wife and I are fortunate to have decent pensions when we retire...
Plenty of chores and things to do on the farm...
