I need the TBN brain trust. I have some Permethrin 10%.

My wife had made a mixture of almost 50/50 and put it on the dogs (large breed) last summer, one of them showed a reaction to it and I;m sure it was because of the solution ratio.

I had read a thread on here several years ago (cant find it now) where one of you dog breeders had a formula ratio for spraying/dipping/rubbing on dogs for ticks and fleas.???

Anyone have a "safe" ratio??

I suggest you call your veterinarian. He/she should be able to answer any questions.

You can find all kinds of info by using google.
Just be careful, Permethrin is deadly for cats!!! I found this information while looking for insecticide for fleas.

I'm going to ask someone with hunting dogs tomorrow.

I dont know about the vets up there, but most vets in my area are either busy or out on a herd check. If you dont have a relationship with one, you can also wait forever for a return call.

Google is the 1st thing I do, hard to beat trusted recommendations from reputable TBN members vs a Google "hit", but that is just my opinion. I do use Google like everyone else, but for "general" researching.

I was able to find the manufactures label online and think I have what I need (bottle lost the fold over label)

Use with caution on the dog that had the reaction. I have seen some dogs have an allergic reaction! Can truly make the K-9 ill also to pass on some information given to me years ago, keep small children away from the dogs after applied.

That is a concern, I 'm sure the solution she previously used was WAY too strong. !st thing I'm going to do is dust them with Diatomaceous earth, works slower but I have had good luck with it in the past.

The solution I found on the label breaks down to 1oz permethrin to 1.6 gallons of water, if I use it I will try it even "thinner"

0.25% is the typical commercial dilution rate for use in the house but not on the pets. I sell a lot of flea products but none contain permethrin for use directly on the animal.

I did some searching and found a few bits of information:

Some hunting and hiking forums recommend a mix where the Permethrin is at a 0.15% strength for use on the dog.

This link has some interesting info but no dosages Permethrin for Dogs - VetInfo

The products sold that I could find for application directly to the dog (United States) dont seem to tell you the dosages online. I would suggest you go to a pet store and look at the label on a product they sell to see the dosage.

Western,

Years ago I was a K9 handler on the PD we used " DURANON" made by Colton products inc. Easton P.A. Yellow and brown can with green top. Couldn't believe I still had it, 20 + years old. No I'm not a hoarder just luck.
I went and checked my supply closet can said 0.50% Permethrin. 99.5% inert ingredients.
Spoke with a current handler and one of the old trainers they don't believe it is made any longer due to illness caused by Permethrin, don't know for sure hope this helps.

David thanks!, I know how you PD dog handlers love your dogs, When I was doing Highway interdiction, I needed guys like you every day:thumbsup: I haven't heard of Duranon, but will look it up. One of the K9 guy's I used quite a bit used 1 drop of Ivermectin for his Weimaraner (sp) every few months.

I did a quick google only found the clothing treatment used that when tracking very good stuff, but always would spray on clothing before putting it on and let it dry before use. Had a jump suit in the trunk. Good for hunters and hikers clothing.

I only use it to spray on clothes. I saw some Permethrin at the farm store a few years ago and I assumed for some reason it was for use with horses. I poured the Permethrin in a bucket, then soaked my work clothes in the chemical and let it air dry. Works well for months.

Dan, I have used it for horses and cows, I generally used Ivermectin on the cattle, but Permethrin is a cheaper topical spray....used sparingly.

You guys mention using it on your clothes, I have known allot of guys that swear by it for ticks and chiggers, but I was always "a'skeered" to use it in the laundry when the kids where little.

The Permethrin wears off at some point but it takes months of weekly washing to do so. I would treat the work pants in the spring and by the late summer or early fall the chemical was starting to be less effective. The work pants would be worn/washed once a week so it took a fair amount of washing to remove the chemical. I have been lazy over the last couple of years and just spraying DEET on the pants. The Permethrin never bothered me but too much DEET soaked into the pants and kept close to the skin will cause me a slight rash.

Been using 33% permethrin for 10 years for mosquitos and around perimeter of the house to control pests. I mix 2 oz to 2.5 gal water for the stihl packpack fogger and spray every few weeks as needed in mosquito season .

My daughter runs with her boston terrier (he is a little terror) through wooded areas and he tends to wander off in the woods thus bringing ticks home and getting on the furniture and such. I read the label and recommendation and we did a about a .2% mix in a quart spritzer bottle and applied to his coat and rubbed in (not a drench) and this eliminated 95% of the tick problem. Using as a drench or dip you want it to be .05%

Thanks Carl, I was going to mix it weak anyway, also going to rub it on after misting instead of the "drench"...just in case.

I have yet to find a vet that will actively help someone save money. All around here are strictly out for money.
