Pet Dumping

Like you stated you have 2 children and if one of those dogs is on your property growling at you or maybe your children next time I wouldn't wait for the next time if I caught them. I am a owner of 2 rotts and to be honest I too let them run loose but only when I'm outside otherwise they are couch dogs. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif When we moved to this location 4 years ago I talked to my nearest neighbors one of which has told me he carries a pistol when outside because he doesn't like dogs. He has 3 though that bark alot when chained outside (doesn't let his run). Anyway I have trained my dogs to stay in the property and haven't to this day had one of my dogs on their place. My point after all this gibberish I've told them if they feel threatened in anyway (as long as it's on their property) shoot and ask questions later and these are my dogs. Now I wouldn't think a person should shoot a pet dog for trespassing unless someone's safety is at risk. Blah, blah, blah. But anyhow,,,, good luck to you with your problem. I do like that shoot, shovel, shut up! because then you don't have to explain.

Generally they tell me you can legally shoot if you or your animals are in danger. The dog warden suggested raising rabbits. Gives the neighbor's dogs something to eat, and a good excuse to shoot.

I have some definite thoughts. One of my neighbors, has a bull that paid my cows a visit one evening. I wouldn't have cared except this is the ugliest, scurvy looking mongrel I have ever seen. I did not want him breeding any of my cows. Of course, when I went out to run him home, he was not intimidated at all. I grabbed a BB gun and popped him a couple of times on the buttocks, a little trick I learned out at the track. He got the idea, and headed home.
I didn't know it, but the people were watching, and called the sheriff on me. Short story, no charges were filed. a report was made, and the deputy told me that what I did was a no no. None of it made sense to me, based on the law I knew, so I did some research.
What I found was that the law in Texas had changed. I was surprised to discover that.
1. It is against the law to kill any domestic animal without the permission of the owner.
2. The only thing you can do about Estray animals is to call the sheriff.
3. A execption is made for dogs that attack or kill livestock. If you catch one in the act you can shoot it yourself. Or you can follow it to it's home, and call the law. If the officer sees evidence that the dog indeed attacked or killed livestock, he asks the dog owner to destroy the dog. If he can not, or will not the officer must destroy it himself.
Paul. for your situation in Texas, all a home owner can do is call the law. And by the time they get there, the dog will be long gone. I can sure see why so many use the S.S.S. thing.

I run a pet Q & A Bulletin Board on the internet and talk to pet people all over the country (world). the only sensible means of controlling the pet overpopulation problem is what is being used now in CA and CO and some other areas. When the vets spay a female animal they insert a readable chip under the skin so it is easy to identify. Neutered males are obvious. Anyhow dog and cat licenses are "required" in these areas. For a neutered or spayed pet the cost is $10 or $15. For an intact animal the cost is $250 or more. This separates the men from the boys. People who are breeding valuable purebreds are willing to pay the fee. The other people realize it is cheaper to spay or neuter than pay the annual license fee. It works and needs to be put in place everywhere. With the problems we have with pet overpopulation it HAS to be done now or in the future. I have a friend in NC who is the "killer" guy at a shelter. He kills about 2800 to 3000 a month. Nobody lasts long on that job but it is reality. It has to be done or we start having them dumped on others. I liked the post above... Hell we have people dumping babies the same way. What can we expect? Takes all kinds - maybe we need a spay neuter plan for people who are caught doing such things. My $0.02 worth.

Had a similar problem with free roaming dogs a few years ago when my daughter had just learned to walk. We were out at the woodpile (I was stacking wood) and my daughter was wandering around. Next thing I hear is my daughter start to cry and some deep throated growling and a dobermann came walking around the corner - actually was between me and my daughter.

Well, to cut a long story short this dog did not seem to be acting normally at all - was unusually aggressive and only responded to me viciously. It's amazing the protective response you get for your kids though - and that woodpile provided a lot of ammunition.

To this day I don't know whose dog that was. I'm just sorry I didn't manage to kill it (local regulations be damned). I cannot tolerate people that don't train their dogs (especially large ones) to be calm around children. I should clarify that I have nothing against specific breeds - the softest dog I ever knew was a big 200lb plus rottweiler named Lucy.

I realize there is problems with the dog and cat population,but not everyone has their animals licensed(right or wrong) how would they enforce chip implants(they cant even enforce a licensing law)?Are they going to have the pet police going around to every house in the state and verifying if an animal is neutered or not,sounds to me like more government control and red tape and regulations. Where I live they have a license requirement for dog owners,the fees paid are suppose to go into a fund that pays for peoples livestock that is killed by dogs. The thing that gets me is some little old lady has a poodle in her house in the middle of town and she has to pay the same fee,like her poodle is going to pull down a calf and kill it. The last thing we need is more laws. Here is a problem we have and that is rabies,to have your pet vaccinated is a fairly expensive thing,but a good thing to do.I know the state flys over wooded areas on occasion and drops rabies vaccine out of airplanes for the racoons etc to eat in hopes of controlling the spread of the dreaded disease,but a lot of people do not take there animals to be vaccinated because of the exspense involved,I think if the state could have a place for people to bring there animals to one day of the week and vaccinate them at a reduced price or free a lot more people would be willing to get there animals vaccinated,which they have done on occasion back in the hills. A lot of people are poor and have pets and will not bother or even consider spending this kind of money on a dog or cat.

I've enjoyed reading the dumping stories here and felt I just had to share mine. One day I was out walking the part of the property that borders the national forest. As I came around the bend in the old logging road I looked ahead of me and I couldn't believe what I saw. There, tied to a tree, was the shiny red hull of a completely stripped, approx. 16 foot boat. I think it was a mastercraft but I don't know much about boats. Everything but the red carpet had been taken from the boat, including the steering wheel. I assumed that it had been stolen, stripped, and dumped. I was half-right. There is a small marina a mile from my house and I inquired if anyone was missing a boat. No one was. Then I called the sheriffs office and they informed me that they didn't handle that but that there was a DNR guy who happened to be there so they put him on the phone. I explained what I'd found and that the the old permit sticker was still on it so it should be traceable to the owner. He came out the next day while I was at work, looked it over, TOOK THE STICKER OFF (?!), then called me at work and said the boat had not been reported stolen and that it was probably just dumped. He said he would do some more checking and get back with me. That was the last I ever heard from him. OK So now it's my problem to fix. I then asked a good friend who belonged to the local GOBN (Good-old-Boy-Network) and asked if he would ask around. Within two days I found out the whole story and the culprit. This fellow had bought this boat for the motor, trailer, and such, stripped it, and then dumped it on my land. I "ran into him" (translation - I waited for him there because I knew his wife worked there) the next day at the convenience store and nicely, and casually asked him if he knew anything about it. He replied that he knew a "friend" of his that had dumped "over there on Guvment land". I told him that it was not guvment land but my property, again in a non-confrontational tone. I also told him I knew where the boat came from and that the trailer to it was sitting in his driveway. He sheepishly admitted it and said he would come get it "soon" and that he was sorry but he had thought it was guvment land (as if that made it OK). I waited patiently for three months. Then one day I had my uncle's 855 JD with FEL, loaded the boat hull on the trailer, took it to his front yard, tied it off to a tree, and drove off. Problem solved. We still exchange pleasantries when I see him at the store and have never had a cross word.

I have rental property in town. I get dumped animals and animals my tenants (whom aren't supposed to have pets, I'm a weak suck and let them get away with it if they're not chained outside) leave when they move. The local animal control takes two days or two weeks or never comes to get them. The strays are bad enough but I like animals and usually play with the tenants dogs when I'm at their house. It pays to be on good terms with the dogs if you have to go in when nobodys around. That means when I pull up after the tenants have moved the poor confused buggers run up to me because I'm their buddy. There is a couple of dogs that I have rotated between tenants just so I don't have to take them to the pound. So much for the rules!
