How do you think it would work with a rosebud?

They seem to be the only ones who really took to it. They think that a jug of gas is safer than a bottle of ACE? Dont know about that. From what ive been reading, these petrogen systems have a bad habit of leaking gasoline under pressure.... That cant be safe?

Gasoline/Ox systems are popular in asia i guess. Maybe due to a lack of acetylene?

I think that portability is a big deal here too. The cost of one of these petrogen units puts you into good plasma cutter territory, but plasma cutters and all associated power and air supplies don't lend themselves well to being tossed into a small compartment on a rescue truck. I think I even saw in one of the pictures that they were using a medical style of oxygen bottle. That would mean you'd only have to add the empty petrogen tank, handle, and hoses. Most rescue trucks I drive have a gas can on there already for the jaws of life, etc.

Is that gas can a pump up or pressurized unit? I don't know if I would trust just any old gas can. It would have to be sealed.

Is the gas you all carry for 2 or 4 strokes engines ?

I think Petrogens cans are specific to their product due to the fact that theyre pressurized and need a hose to take fuel to the torch. But they do sort of look like a Jusrite can?

We carry unmixed gasoline on our truck for the water pump, generator, and hydraulic jaws. I think there are some 2 stroke power units out there for the jaws, but any I've used have been 4 stroke.

It looks like that can is pressurized. I was suggesting that the unit could be carried on the truck empty since we already have gasoline. The advantage there is that you only have one can to have to worry about keeping fresh and topped off.

That brings me to another thought. Do you think the petrogen torch would care if the fuel is fresh or not?

I have never seen the comparison between burning new gas and old gas. I have cranked up cars that have sat for years. The BTU output comparison, is probably close.

For home use I think I will stick with my oxy-propane torch. Same gauges, hose, only a tip change. Also to cut thick pieces with any torch even with a gap between all metal has to be heated. Plus a high pressure for the oxygen blow part of the torch, around 100psi. All the preheats do on the tip is heat up the material before cutting. Its the oxygen that does the super heating and blowing away of the material. In ship yards they use map gas a combination of Acetylene/Propane to cut multiple layers of material by preheating all materials then use a high pressure oxygen. It doesn't matter what gas we use it is only used to preheat before cutting. It is the Oxygen that does the cutting.

Gas is for convenience and for the cost I will stick with my Oxy/Propane system.

So do you save quite a bit with your propane vs. acetylene?

If I include cost of Ace tank about 3 to one in savings. Plus I can get propane on weekends. A propane tip has multiple preheats 10 and higher depending on the size of tip. Normal preheats on Ace tip are 4 to 6.

I find for myself I use a 20lb tank propane for every 244 cu/ft of Oxygen, a large tank of oxy. I also find I get a cleaner cut with propane, I get less slag.
