Thank you for the photos!!! I'm leaning to the MX5100, the HST+ and grand L options would be nice but the dealer says the 3940 wont run the flail mower in thick grass

You should compare the L5240-HST+ in the Grand L lineup to the MX5100. Philip.

I would but that is getting out of my allowance from the wife The 5100 equipped the same as the 3940 is $1300 more. I guess Ill keep an eye on the lot and make sure he has it for a few months then wheel and deal again :thumbsup:

Look at the GL 5040 gst. I have one and love the glide shift. Same engine as the MX 5100 but 1.5 more HP at the PTO with 100 less RPMs on the engine. No hydro whine. 600 pound stronger lift with the 3pt hitch. A very overlooked tractor in the Kubota lineup. Lots of deluxe features. Check it out.

I would like to think the GL4740 would run a 7' flail mower. What is the price difference between the MX5100-HST and L4740-HST? Philip.

I have a 7' offset Ford 907 Flail mower that I run with my Ford 861 powermaster (60hp). He claims the 3940 would be on the lower HP end and would work ok if the grass is short but would lack HP in the thick stuff . claims roughly 5HP per foot of flail for tractor.

I didnt have him quote the 4740 but here is a run down of all like equipped tractors

Quick attach bucket on the loader, R-4's, 4x4, HST trans

You may want to add the 4240 into that list. It comes with the larger 854 loader and I think it's 35 or 36 hp at the PTO. Sounds like it might be just enough extra to run your flail mower without being too much more than the 5100. The great thing about the HST is that if you miss a few days and that grass starts getting a little tall you can easily vary your speed if the engine starts to bog down.

Don't you just love it when somebody throws another option when you already have too many?

Last spring when I was looking I came across a 5240 HST with TnT, fel, sun shade, and a nice hydraulic boxblade with 23 hours for $27k. I was just starting to look and was at the point where I had narrowed down that I wanted the extra lift height of the larger loader putting me into the 4240 and larger sized GL tractors. If it had been a few weeks later I probably would have bought it.

Just keep your eye out and look as often as you can. Plus you need to be ready to buy, when a deal shows up, and they will, be ready to pull the trigger. Also try not to narrow it down to just the 4740 but maybe the 4240 through 5740.

You also need to ask yourself how far are you willing to go? A coworker just bought a 36' twin engine boat from Arkansas and had it trucked up here. 1600 miles on a semi with an escort car. For me looking that far away would never have entered my mind for a boat. Yet he kept his eyes open, found a boat on a small lake with no river access or lifts so to move it you had to hire a semi with a trailer that could be submerged then have the boat floated onto it. Save himself $30k.

I have a 3940 and it has plenty of power to run a 6' flail or brush hog. I burn the belts off my flail b/f I run out of HP.
