So if deer fence keeps the deer out...is there anything that discourages snakes?

Maybe not 100%, but something that makes it less interesting to go that way for a snake?

Sharp gravel...a 3' solid barrier, a driveway with shell fragments???

There could be some money in it, if the right solution were found!
I've always heard that moth balls would work, but wherever there is water in Florida there will be sakes and gators.

Hmmmm...much to think about here. It seems silly, but the payoff could be huge if the right solution were found.

So something with odor?

Yet not terribly offensive to humans...that would last for a period of time.

And bet if you kept the mice away with a similar odor approach, there would be one less food source around for the snakes...

The food source for these moccasin's are bull frogs and lot's of them, I believe removing the thick cover will help move the frogs back closer to the trees and water where they hide out, we shall see.

I bought a bag of Snake Away, but I haven't put it out yet. It's been a few months, and when I think about doing it, we have rain in the forecast. I have the same problem with spraying for weeds.

At my place, snakes got really bad because of all the mice I had in my chicken coops. We trapped and killed as many mice as we could, but we never made an impact on their numbers.

Then a couple calico cats showed up. I guess they where dumped, but I really don't know where they came from. We fed them, hoping they would eat the mice. Then a tom cat showed up and we didn't want him around, but he stuck around anyway, and our two calico's had kittens.

We now had a dozen cats, and that's when we noticed that the mice where not as plentiful as they used to be. The cat population seems to be holding steady at around 30 cats.

There hasn't been a mouse seen by us in years!!! Our snake problem just about totally disappeared. Not just around the house, but all over the land. I used to see them when bush hogging, but that hasn't happened in several years.

The cats wonder all over the land, and it could be that they have all the mice under control, which I doubt, but something has changed, and the snakes have been going elsewhere

Does anyone there use selective herbicides to hold weeds and such in check?

I talked her into spraying the fence line, she was concerned about it getting into her drinking water, most of these people are city people and are dead set against any herbicide, I had 1 customer who said he wouldn't have any herbicide sprayed on his place and he didn't until dog fennels grew up about 6' high and he was allergic to them and broke out in a terrible rash, at that point he couldn't wait for me to spray his fence lines, no more dog fennels and no more rash.

Like you Mr. Eddie, we encourage the cats to stay around. We've got one that is a mouser on steroids, using mouse tails for daily flossing.

I even let that one drive the tractor on occasion!

People talk bad about cats, but around here they are just another link in the food chain. Between the eagles, coyotes and even the deer and turkeys chasing them, most don't seem to last very long.

We're in a region for rattle snakes and copper heads and I look for them, but thankfully over the last 5 years, we've not seen anything other than a very few small garter snakes.

Might be folklore, but I've heard a large deer population will keep snakes away...we've got lots of deer and no snakes, so maybe it's true...!?

Sorry, back over to you Mr. Lineman!
