Then there is my take;
dang thats a fairly new snow cat, wouldn't mind having that :D .

Pure speculation but It might have involved someone else operating the cat, spinning the tracks while he attempted to kick a log or something under the track for traction? Years ago I was almost involved in a similar accident personally, however it didn't involve a snowcat.

About a week before Christmas we had ourselves a nice snow storm; of course, in the days preceding the 25th, we got a major rainstorm that both knocked out power, and took away almost all our snow! We're fortunate to have a generator; Lord knows my parents didn't have one when I was a child.

Anyhow, here are some shots of the Kioti playing in the snow; oh, and a buried Ford.

I managed to get the garage organized enough to get the Kioti under cover the day prior; definitely glad I got it done.

Many many years ago I used to work for a Thiokol dealer, that was back in the early 70's.
Many an interesting night doing repairs on the mountains of the ski areas.

I used to operate a very similar machine, yes it had built in safety switches to prevent accidents but they were disconnected. I actually heard of a driver that got run over and killed because he stopped in the middle of nowhere to take a leak while standing on the track
How did this happen?

Actor Jeremy Renner is in critical but stable condition following a snowplough accident in Nevada over the weekend.

“We can confirm Jeremy is in critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather-related accident while ploughing snow earlier today,” a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter late on Sunday night. Renner is receiving “excellent” care, the spokesperson added.

New details are emerging with TMZ reporting that Mr Renner was ploughing the road around a quarter mile from his Nevada home to get his family out after a snowstorm on New Year’s Eve.

The plough, a Snowcat, accidentally ran over one of the actor’s legs, despite a large array of safety features, leading to major blood loss, a neighbour said according to the outlet.

Well a follow up on the homemade plow . Works well enough. You just have to tilt the blade perfect . This is about 8” of snow with three foot drifts along the driveway.

From USA Today

Balaam said the accident occurred after Renner used his snowcat to help a family member who had driven one of Renner's personal vehicles and was stuck in the snow near the actor's home.

After towing the vehicle with his snowcat, which weighs over 14,000 pounds, Renner got out to speak to the family member, when his snowcat started to roll, Balaam said. He added Renner was run over by the snowcat while attempting to get back in its driver's seat. The snowcat came to rest in a pile of snow.

wow... horrible way to go. My prayers are with his family. Also hoping for Balaam's case that this was a simple case of operator error on Renner's part, and not due to any neglected maintenance item.
