Please, educate about radios

I can't bring myself to pay for a service I can get for free. I have an extensive selection of mp3z and bought a house thumper that will play them. Burn 3 or 4 hundred to a disk and listen to what you want to, not what a robotic dj with bad taste wants to offer.

I have had Sirius for 4 years and I love it. Upgraded last year to a lifetime membership for $270. I have not paid a sirius bill in 8 months.

I really like my Sirius radio. I bought a Stiletto (sp?) and got a couple of vehicle kits and an executive speaker system, so I have it in my truck, on my tractor and in my barn. They do require an antenna that can get to clear sky.

The main reason I bought mine was for sports programming - mostly NFL. I agree with the comments about why pay for something that I can get for free, but I think that Sirius was my only option to be able to listen to NY Giants and Arizona Cardinals while I bushhog. I do enjoy some of the music stations and the Blue Collar comedy channel. I find it to be alot like satellite TV though - 400 channels and nothing on that I like!

I got xm @ 6 years ago and love it. Big selection of everything from music/new/sports one of my favorites for evening listening is old time radio theatre. Delphi makes it's skifi unit that besides being a xm reciever it also is a fm transmitter so it sends out a signal @ 100 yards that any fm radio can pick up. Works great except when your working in the shop listening to something good and some kid comes along and puts on c rap music cause they don't know your around
The main unit slides out of its holder in the house(needs external antenna) slides into another unit I have in the truck or into another one I have in the skiff. It will also slide into a boom box type player if you want to buy that too. I am grandfathered in at 7$ a month but didn't know about the lifer subscription, will have to look at that.
Not as big as a selection that you get on the net but is easier not having to mess with podcasts and playlists. Plus you can keep the transmitter unit out of the weather and just use cheapo radios or headsets when your working outside.

I have an Ipod touch and a Bose sound dock system. I have all my favorite tunes loaded on my Ipod and use the sound dock in my workshop and then i can also take the Ipod on my motorcycle in the summer.....then of course...the headphones while I'm plowing snow or workin the Deere outside. I love it!!:thumbsup:

I tried listening to my ipod while on the tractor but that didn't work well for me. I was using the ear bud stereo headset. The tractor was loud; I had to really crank the volume and that was uncomfortable. Plus I was listening to talk podcasts, not music. In addition, I didn't like not being able to hear the tractor in case something went wrong.

I've got Sirius in the car, my reception on my FM boombox or FM in car at my workshop is about 1 crackling channel, sirius works well.

I was going to get a Stilleto but it looks like they have been discontinued due to poor reception. So I'm looking at the Stratus 8.

Are there other better alternatives for satellite radio?

I plan on swapping it between several vehicles, tractor, home, shop, etc. I realize I'll probably need something with an antenna. But I'll discontinue the car Sirius.

I use my iPhone for all entertainment. It allows me to stream Pandora, listen to live streamed radio (Saturday morning Car Talk and Wait, Wait...). I also download books from the local library system (free), and always have one going. Trouble sleeping? Put on "Backstory with the American History Guys". At 2am, you'll be out like a light. Note that I really enjoy "Backstory..." during the day - I highly recommend that you give it a listen.

If that doesn't float your boat, put up a TV antenna with a mast mount amp and rotor. You will haul in FM stations from 200 miles away. You will need an FM receiver with a decent front end. They can be found at thrift stores like Salvation Army, or electronics recyclers.

I can imagine swapping television masts between vehicles, with amp and rotor. How well do they perform at 70mph?

Check out the delphi mi/fi's. They are a xm reciever that also transmits a fm signal. It picks up the xm/serius signal and any fm radio within @150 ' can pick up whatever channel you select. The unit is the size of a pack of cigarettes and you get different holders and antennas with it. One for the house, car, and even the boat so you just plug the unit in wherever you are and you have xm. $7 bucks a month service fee and I think I only paid a little over a hundred for the unit 3 or 4 years ago and it is still going strong.
