Can anyone tell me how big a plow a ford 5000 diesel tractor (69 hp) will handle?

thanks

3-16" ought to about do the trick. 4-12 or 4-14 in soil that is not compacted may be possible. Ken Sweet

3-16 in my heavy clay soil.

Some might try a 4-14 in lighter soils, but - you can always drive a little faster; but if you spin out with too big a plow then what?

Is this pull type or semi mounted plow?

What type of soil conditions and terrain? I.e. Flat or hills.

Pull type 3-16's will be a load under most conditions. Breaking Sod it may be to much.

We pulled a semi mounted 4-16's in corn stubble and lighter soils with our 5,000. Power wasn't the issue it was weight. We had 15-5 x 38 tires with fluid in them and it was still a weight issue.

In Sod or tough ground we had 3 -14 pull type and that was all it wanted due to traction issues.

Another problem was the front wants to star gaze real easy with the semi-mounted. We had a rock box that we filled with rocks. Weight???

For all around use I would recommend semi-mounted 3-16's and probably 4th gear in normal conditions and 3rd in hard going.

Agree with above posts. I've heard that 20 - 25 HP per bottom (depending on soil and size: 12", 14", 16") is a good guess.

That would seem to fit with the previous recommendations.
