Rob, read up on chicory, it might be something that will work in your climate. It has a long carrot like tap root. Also it might help to terrace your plots, using your box blade to hold water. I live in GA, so I'm in a much different climate. IF you get a chance. Go to Cooperseed.com, it's local, but it has alot of info about seed. (could be helpful) Clay P.S Fert, lime, Fert, Lime

Thanks for tip about terracing Clay.
And will try the chicory too. I think I will have to divide the plot up into sections. I want to grow grains more for seeds for bird season and then grow a Winter crop of some sort for the deer, mostly for nourishment during the Winter. That way I can mow my seed part down for dove season without disturbing the Winter food plot for deer.

The deer plot could have 2 seasons then. One in Spring, hopefully luring them in for the early hunt, and one for the Winter feeding. I want the bird plot to mature by July or August so I can mow it and get them used to coming in for seed prior to the season opener.
Does that sound doable?

Rob, I manage 348ac in a QDM county in GA, we mix all types of plantings. We plant clover, oats, turnips, peas, buckwheat, alyce clover etc. We plant clover, turnips, and oats in the fall. And clover, buckwheat, and alyce clover in the spring. We do this because you never know how the weather is going to treat you....rain. I think mixing it up is a great plan. Also try different seed, some grow better here some grown better there. PS Clover likes lime and water. Clay

I agree with the bald headed guy with the backhoe anand Case dozer, I never had a good apprecation for smooth, level, dirt until I bought some acerage and a utility tractor.

I sure wish there was a way to see all of the pictures that used to comprise the meat of this older thread.

I know I'm digging up old bones here, but I'd like to see how that fancy box worked on your food plot.

Happy tractoring folks.

Studytime, welcome to TBN!:) Your description of Eddie Walker as "the bald headed guy with the backhoe and Case Dozer" is priceless. I hope he finds it as amusing as I did. I can tell you're gonna fit in just fine here.:D
