It’s a carrot. Screws into the inside of the pipe. Holds very tight Chinese fingers get torn up too fast in the rocks.

Pipe breaks before carrot slips. You need a three foot bar to screw the 2” carrot in fully.

Those look like the taper taps I used in the water well industry. They had buttress threads so that the pipe would not slip off. We used them to fish pipes out of the wells. It was impressive how much weight that they could hold.

People asked about rocks. Here is one of many the little plow pulled out of the ground today.

In situations like this I pre rip the run without pipe then pull the pipe in on the second go.
