Plumbing store vs Hydraulic store for adapter?

In a 1/4 to 3/8 reducing bushing I don't believe its going to matter, brass or steel. Even in 1/4 to 1/2" or 1/4 to 3/4. Don't think I'd feel safe recommending 1/4 to 1" however.....

When making a decision on something like this, you have to look at the actual shape of the item and THEN decide about the amount of strength needed and available. In this case we are not talking about valves, fittings or sections of tube, but REDUCING BUSHINGS....

have you ever seen a taper pipe reducing bushing set way proud of a fitting? i have.. that means you are now down to looking at wall strength for a portion of that fitting.

Soundguy makes a good point. Until a few years ago, most steel fittings were being manufactured with a yellow hexavalent (Chromium 6) plating that some people mistook for brass.

Due to environmental regulations, this plating is no longer being applied to fittings, but there are still a lot of fittings in the field (and in some inventories) that were made before the switch.

The new trivalent plating in use by most manufacturers is silver in appearance, and there should be a lot less confusion over what material you have.

Just use a magnet and see if it will stick.
