WoW. Gotta love TBN. 13 page thread cuz 20 20 went on a little rant
Don't think it was the rant itself, but because the OP was asked for ID, the comment was made that our individual freedoms were eroding.

Perhaps it's just me, but I was asked for my ID a bunch of times when I was in military, and ironically enough, it seems I have more freedom now as a civilian.

EDIT I will admit, the few times I've gotten a seat belt ticket from the State Police, I inform the officer VERY nicely that I find it ironic that I can put my do my duty for our country, but I need the state to fine me for my own safety, but at least it's nice to know that the highway patrol actually has the time to pull me over due to the lack of crime that they don't have to pay attention to. I DO NOT call them glorified traffic cops LOL

Yes 20/20, to some extent I agree with you, but that's the price of progress I suppose.

Yep. The fear of the neighbors telling your folks you were up to no good did tend to be a good deterrent. It still is, if there are parents to tell.

I was quite embarrased one day when I called out two teenagers in my neighborhood for bad behavior*. Told them I'd go straight to their fathers if I saw it again. One kid told me I wouldn't be telling his father. I said-Oh yeah why not? Turns out his father had just died from cancer...
Funny thing is it worked and I never witnessed the problem behavior again...maybe they just needed someone to call them on it.

*They would ride around the neighborhood in a golf cart shouting expletives at barking dogs...go figure.

As for asking for ID...one of my sons, now 24, told me once he used to buy beer starting when he was 15 or 16...he'd just go to different stores and if carded say oops I left my ID in the car...and some of the time the clerk would say never mind and sell it to him anyway. He was a big kid so I could see why they might think he was 21. So if they card everyone, no exceptions, it might help with underage drinking.

I figure they didnt like the dogs barking at them. I can relate. Dogs chasing vehicles is bad ... I imagine the dogs were chasing if not penned.

So no more Leave it to Beaver or Father knows best....all gone...

Oh please such drama! Back then it was Elvis gyrating his hips, and that dam* rock and roll music that was destroying the youth of America, but you know what my parents turned out just fine, and raised two fine kids in the end. It's all a matter of perspective.

Growing up i was never scared of the police...i was, however scared of my parents. I knew if i meesed up bad enough, id get the strap.

Government plays at least part of the role in this as well. Around here, if I were to take a belt to my son or daughter, the school tells them to tell and if they do, the next day I have Child Protective Services showing up on my doorstep. BTDT. It wasn't a belt though, it was a rug burn from my son fighting with his mother.:confused2:

I can't believe this has gone on to over 14 pages of replies! NO I can't believe I entered a comment about this subject.

Yes I am a vet, yes I spent some time in the Pacific Rim, Yes I came back and did not tell too many people I was a Vet, wasn't popular back in the late 60's, Now I have VET Plates on my car. So things have changed for the better as far as I am concerned regarding VETS!

But 9/11 changed everything in this country and if someone wants to see my ID I am more than pleased to show it to them....

yes well both overactive cps and teachers are part of the problem too. im a firm believer in spare the rod...

A parent is supposed to raise their children, not have them be your "BFF". Sometimes its ugly, however if done right you can be friends and still firm with your child.

The schools can't win. If they react they over react. If they don't raect we have a Columbine. Ever notice how we can all do everyone else's job better than they can?

Rants tend to wander here.
