Polaris Ranger Crew Stuck in Swamp Two Weeks Now....

Wish me and some of my red neck buddies were closer to you, hamburger, beer and mud sounds like a party to us.

The biggest thing you have going for you are the trees behind the Polaris. Here is a pic of a tree that fell into my pond and I used 2 come-a-longs (4 ton and 1 ton) attached to two big trees to pull it out by myself. Trust me, that tree weighed much more than your Polaris! The same technique may be useful to pull the Polaris out backwards? Good luck.

Planning on another week of sitting in the mud?

I would get all your tools lined up beforehand.

You may be able to walk on a sheet or two of plywood. Perhaps attach some rings or something so you can pull them back out. It will make climbing around the wreck more pleasant.

If you buy a winch from HF, go oversized. The 12K winches are $299 if you can find the right coupon. Or, browse Craigslist for a good Warn winch.

Assuming that is your property, and you need a trail around it, cut a new one. But with hand held equipment (come-a-longs, chainsaw winches, etc), you should still be able to crawl behind it and attach the winch to something solid behind the Ranger. Perhaps a good heavy duty pulley (I suppose I should track one down someday).

I'm trying to think of how one might build an A-Frame. You could cut wood down there to build it, then tie or chain it together. Plan on it sinking a bit, and perhaps needing winching back out, unless you can tie trees on both sides of the trail together over the rig. Anyway, If you could get about 2 feet of vertical lift, you could get some good plywood under the tires and the whole thing would come out easily.

If you are out of town, but have family members in town, at least give them a shopping list, and perhaps instructions how to build a few things you might want in advance.

As mentioned by myself earlier, if it doesn't go forward, and you can't get it to pull up, then try pulling it backwards. Figure out how to make it work.

Vacation Days????

And, make sure the clowns that got it stuck are there helping.

Helping? They should get to crawl around in the mud to hook your chains/lines onto it :D

Just make sure you watch them. They'll figure out some way to attach the chains to the plastic pieces on the Ranger.

I can imagine digging out the soup from behind, but it may be necessary for some grunt work to dig out good places to attach the winch.

I had to go back and reread this to make sure I didn't miss were it came out of the mud ,I cannot believe anyone would leave a machine stuck in the mud for almost a month . REALLY ?

Agreed! $20k down the drain. Maybe its going to an auction! :)

They're not quite that expensive, I don't think. But I'm seeing about $14K for a new one.

The rig should be designed for rough service including water, but in many senses it will be like a flood vehicle with water and dirt getting where you least expect it. Fortunately most of the passenger compartment is out of the water.

You'll have to see what its like when you pull it out. And if you send it to the dealer and insurance company, it could well be totalled. I'd hose it down real good, check the fluids (probably drain them), grease everything, and see how she goes. Replacing CV boots is always a pain, but perhaps worth it in this case, but you could spend a quite a bit of time tinkering on little things.

I recently bought a pickup that had been flooded... back in 1964.... I'm already finding sand in odd places causing rust all over the place. I'll probably end up with a complete tear-down.

That's only partially stuck. I used a company ranger 6x6(older model) in the muskeg in northern Manitoba. I could not get that thing stuck if I tried. One day I let my partner drive, we hit fallen spruce tree and they got tangled up length wise in the front suspension. That day I knew we were stuck, when I opened the glove box to retrieve the winch controls and bubble came up to the surface. It was in deep, approximately 12" over the seat. Less than an hour we were out.

Move it back before going up and forward or you tear the something out for sure. Careful using 12000 lbs winches, that's lots of potential energy, easy to tear out control arms and the such.

Good luck, it should be that hard to get out, just a little messy.

If you get a half a dozen good tight wraps with the built in winch cable, perhaps crossing over a couple of times, it may hold with or without the bolt.

Assuming you have access, it should also be easy enough to replace the missing bolt.
