How heavy was the winch that broke? The rear diff is probably full of mud.

I would be afriad to wrap a strap around the axles because it may bend them.

Don't strap the axles, they are cv shafts...

An axle is an axle. You can call it a CV shaft of you want but it's still an axle to me. This thing is seriously stuck. It's not going to be a warm and fluffy thing to get it out.

They are not inside of a tube.. DO NOT hook anything to them!!

These are not hollow, they will tear apart at the. CV.

Yeah they would break at the CV 1st probably.

It would be nice to get something with a decent winch on it back there. Do you have a blazer/jeep/bronco with a 8000 to 12000 lb winch? Tie it to a tree and start pulling away. Perhaps you could buy, rent, or build a chainsaw winch. Or just go to Harbor Freight (with coupon), and buy a good winch, build a mount to allow you to attach it to a tree, and carry it down there.

If you have something jammed in the rear axle, perhaps it would be better to try to try to pull the Ranger out backwards.
