rswyan, once I was having difficulty getting a wire thru a tight pipe... I squirted about 10 squrts of greese into the pipe and along the wire... well, made it slip thru MUCH easier!! Might try that, shouldn't hurt since you are using ground contact wire anyway.

I am an electrician and you can buy a substance called 'Cable Goo' or similar that you squirt in the conduit as you are pulling and it makes pulls soooooo much easier. Different names exist but I bet one of the box stores carry it.

We use a lot of that, too. It is miraculous how much easier it is.

ok this is an old thread gonna try to bring back to life. If Morton buildings are twice the price are they worth it? What are the differences?

I charge twice the price for my buildings, too, but I give the customer 3X the value as the cheap guys, so they're worth it. I pour my footings the right way, pour my concrete slabs the right way (rebar, fiber, better finish, cover with plastic to cure it), use #1 PT lumber instead of #2, use cypress instead of E. pine for siding, thicker gauge metal with longer warranty, better designs, etc.

Not exactly ripping it up in this recesssion, but never out of work....ever. So apparently, it does pay to charge 2X as much.

See if "morton" gives you more for your money.

sorry but a few, and you mentioned only a few does not justify a 2x in cost to the owner...what you mention is only worth 20% more. The problem with builders is they all claim the other guy does crappy work, fails to do this and do that ... but when he gets to the job, he does the same thing as the next guy...as fast as he can to profit as much as he can...

this is how you do it.

Find the style you want, nail it down to the last color. Go drive around and find the guys that are building, not the builder but the worker bees, they are out there working, easy to find. they are your ticket to the best buy.

building a house? same thing....forget the guy that says he is the builder!!!HE IS NOT THE BUILDER, he just knows the guys in the trade, which are easy to find...drive around building areas in your price range....with plans in hand approach the hard working guys on site with a few bottles of water. beer at the end of the day :licking:

concrete guys, framers, masons, plumbers, electricians, roofers....they are all there if you go looking....

forget the builder...he thinks your a chump and you will hate the guy before its all over.

Read a little and hire your own contractors, you will have much more respect from the guys doing the work because "YOU" are paying them...not some fat pencil pusher that makes big bucks for hiring people to do the job....

go for a drive and talk to the trades, they need the work and love to do the deal without the fat guy in the middle....secret...he is fat because he rips people off and eats all the time and never ever has to really work for it...

Comments like your's only prove your ignorance of the subject. You have NO CLUE what my expenses & costs are, or what extras I give the customer in my bids or really what you're talking about.

I have been "the builder" for 20+ years and I know all the trades-yep, ALL of them as good or better than subs. We build 'em from the ground up. I am a "worker bee". I do all my excavating, concrete & framing with my own crew. I never look at a customer as a "chump". Sure, I use subs. That gets the job done faster. Mine are better than the guys that "drink beer at the end of the day" as you suggest hiring. My subs don't drink beer when they're on a jobsite. If you do, you've hired the wrong subs. Only a loser would hire subs that drink alcohol after work on the customer's property.

I've taken over more jobs from Customers that tried to play builder and had to rescue them from cost over-runs and mismanagement than I care to remember. None of my customers "hate" me when the job is over. In fact, all my business is repeat business or from referrals, not advertising. That tells me they'd use me again or refer me to their friends.

Please try to have enough couth & respect to not lump all builders into one negative category. I wouldn't do that to you and it's very unbecoming of you to do so to me.

Personally, when I hire a sub, I listen more than talk. I listen and let them describe what they are going to do. I ask questions also, but have found that you learn much more by listening. I let their work( and my work-in my trade) speak for itself. Customer referrals are great. The instant someone badmouths another contractor, I know that they are not getting the job. Again, your quality of work and references should speak for themselves.

Great way to run your business. Couldn't agree more.
