Here's a picture of my shop gable end, and the exposed board is the "show rafter". It is cut like the rafters within the truss, but to fit the pitch of the roof in the peak with a tight joint. It is supported by the screws through the lathes extending out from the building.

Sorry about that. The show rafter is not very well exposed because it's covered by the flashing along the gable edge. You can however see the lower edge.

I lightened up Glenn's last attachment, it was showing up pretty dark on my screen.

What program did you use????? How did you do it??? ..... I just gave up, because I couldn't get the size down after I lightened it and tried to repost it. It had too many bytes...... thanks

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements
I have the original version and not the newer version 2.0 that is available now. For some reason Wal Mart sells the new version 2.0 considerably less than everywhere else I have seen it. Wal Mart has it in my area for around $57.

While I had Glenn's picture open in my internet browser I right clicked on it and chose copy
Then I opened up Adobe Photoshop Elements and went up to the File menu and chose From Clipboard
Then I went up to the Enhance menu and chose Fill Flash
I adjusted the Fill Flash up to 50 and hit OK
Then I went up to the File menu and chose Save For Web
Then I adjusted the Save For Web settings to get it well under the file size limit and saved the file to my hard drive

Glenn,
Thanks! I understood that stuff, just the bracing of the trussess and the squaring of the metal roofing i didnt get, and those letter and number graphs..

Read it again. If you don't get it then, you probably need to get someone out to help you that is familiar with construction. I think I've got a brochure somewhere around here showing bracing techniques for trusses. If I can find it I'll scan it and post a copy for you. If you could provide an email address it would be better, because of the file size limitations.

"It had too many bytes...... thanks"

According to my computer the first attachment was 62kb, the second attachment was 64kb, and the last 26kb. Not too many bytes. It may have been dark because it's overcast here, but the file wasn't too large. I tried to make the pictures as large as I could within the screen limitations using photoshop so that he could see what I was talking about.

Ok guys, i am in a bind, i am going to frame in the rough opening for the overhead door this weekend, it is a 16 foot wide door and the rough opening is 16 foot, ok, but the longest peice of 2x6 i see at lowes is exactly 16 feet, ok, i need a 2x6 a little longer than 16 feet for the header because its got to attach to the 4x6 posts, so actually it needs to be 16 feet plus another 3 1/2 inches on each side to nail it to the posts, so whats the secret here? Also, my pickup only has a 6 foot bed, how in the world am i going to get these long peices of lumber home? I have no access to a trailer now. wondering if maybe i can connect 2 shorter peices of 2x6 to make the header for the door?
