Pole Barn Started

What kind of directions/plans did you get from DIY? Are they very detailed? Did you hand nail or use a powered nailer?
you said you roof metal was 17'-3" was it cut to the right legth or do you have to cut each sheet?

The plans were detailed enough for me but you do need to have a basic understanding on what goes where. It contains detailed pictures on all sides of the building and roof along with elevations. Not everything is detailed like nailing the hurican straps and blocking the trusses. You can ask them for a sample packet and they will send it to you.

As for nails I asked them to credit me and went and bought my own nails as I have a Paslod framing nailer.

All my steel is cut to length except for the gable ends which I will need to cut the correct angle. The corner rakes, facia, ridge vent all come in 10 ro 12' lengths so I will need to trim these where needed.

Finished the Roof sheeting yesterday and this morning. Had my brother and a friend over to help and we had a few missed screws on the roof. If they start to leak I will fix them a later time. On to the pictures! Her are a few shoots of the roof set. Hopefully the wind will not be an issue with the roof becasue it is going to be a few weeks for the sides get done!

Still need to put a few screws in on the first 2 sheets and the foam stuff under the sheets as I put them up the other day and did not get to them but should only take a 20 minutes to finish it up.

Did not do much work this weekend on the Pole Barn as I worked all day Saturday on my friends Jet Ski and Sunday was a wash becasue I had to fix my backhoe, as one of the welds let loose! Hopefully I will get a chance to do some more work on it this weekend.

One develops a case of "pole barn eyes" when their wife says, "you know honey we could really use a pole barn to store the bikes and stuff in so we can put the cars in garage again." It is at that exact moment a man can spot a pole barn a mile off a road while doing 75 on a fatboy.

This weekend was dig water line and layout the electric. I have tomorrow and Tuesday off so I will run my cable TV, telephone, and internet line. Hopefully I can get the electrical inspector out tomorrow to look at the trench so I can back fill it. Enjoy the pictures and will post more shortly.

When I built my shop I had to meter it and I had to place my electric 4 ft deep from the transformer to the shop ... about 110 ft. Nice looking shop you are building! I like it!

em14, Running electric off a meter has different requirments. I think in NY state you need to bury the main feed 24" as I recall when I built my house 4 years ago.


All, After 3 1/2 half days of continus work I have water and electric in the barn but no cable, telephone or internet. To much work and not enough time to get things done. I also moved 6 truck loads of bank run and 2 loads of #4 stone. As you can see in one of the pics I still have 3/4 of a load to move but now that the mad rush is over I am going to take a break. Electrical inspector stoped out today and passed the inspection! Only issue is I need to put white tape on the neutral as the wire does not have a white stripe on it. He said he will very when he comes back once I have the place all wired up. He did say he liked my nice neat wiring job!!!

You can see the kids cleaning the tractor in one of the pictures. I have to say that my Kubota B7510 can move some material for it size! I have clocked 15 hours the machine since Sunday and my BUTT hurts!

I have 2 vice grips with 2" steel rings welded to them and I tie a rope to rings and pull the panels up with them.

pemad, just curious how much that bank run costs?(per truck load).
when you did your driveway did you put something down 1st? Or is it just bank run all the way?

tommu56 - that is a cool idea, never thought of that.

streamin - Here are the steps I took for the barn/driveway.

1) removed top soil.
2) laid out Mirafi under layment.
3) spread the bank run. - killer as it contains football size stones and sand!
4) Topped off with #4 crushed stone.

When the ground has settled in a couple of months I will have the guy deliver 2 load of run-a-crush to put over the top of the driveway and barn floor.

Bank run was $160.00 per load. The killer part is the guy charged me $110.00 per load when I built my house 4 years ago. I guess with the fuel prices the cost has gone way up!

Next week I will be getting 6 or 8 loads of fill from a guy down the street for $30.00 a load to box in the barn around the outside and I will put the top soil I removed on top of that material.

Where I live it is all clay and the ground gets real soft in the spring and fall. Mirafi helps stiffen the driveway and will not let the stone sink into the clay. So for my area I would say yes but I am not sure what the soil and weather is like in your area. A 500' roll 12' wide cost me $369.00. For my area I consider it cheap insurance!

Great project. You send some great photos to keep us updated. Nice to get the wiring in I bet. Congrats on the code OK and positive comments. I've found that most inspectors are nice guys and actually appreciate people willing to do nice neat work. I am about to tackle the new service to my barn also.

I also have used a lot of that geotextile under driveway and other areas (behind walls, under stone patios). I know some think it is a waste...I do not. It really is cheap per sqare foot and saves a lot of heaving, holes, weeds, and instability later. It is amazingly tough stuff.

They came from Mid state truss Co, Inc in North Pitcher, NY. The number is 315-653-7354. I am not sure of the cost as I bought the barn as a kit from DIY Pole Barns in Ohio. You can also try S. R. Sloan Inc. in New Hartford or P & R Truss Co in Sidney. They are both very popular in our area.
