Pond Outlet (Level) Control?

Anybody have any good links, pictures, ideas about products or designs that would let me adjust the height of a pond from about 6' to zero, and all heights in between? At max spring flows I need about a 12" pipe to handle the flow without relying on a spillway.

A stop log structure is commonly used for managed wetlands to adjust water level. Basically a spillway with a concrete base and sides. Two metal channels on either side allow wooden boards to be slid into place and stacked on top of one another in the channel. To deepen, add another board or take one away to make it shallower. Excess water just flows over the top of the uppermost board.

My pond has a 8" slide gate valve. It is under water now, can't get pictures.
