Drat! Another possum in the trap last night. So far we have caught 8 possum. I guess we have to catch every possum in the neighborhood before they will stop setting off the trap to allow us to catch the coyote.

Oh well, at least I'm getting rid of the possums.

Those darn things don't seem to honor property lines.

Tallyho; Are you cookin sweet taters with your possum.

I doubt you'll get the coyote in the live trap, to be honest. If they see a possum in there, if they don't already know exactly what the live trap is (which is likely anyway) they'll immediately recognize it for what it is. Pretty crafty animal all around. In my experience, which is limited, the only remedy for a coyote is either a snare or gunfire.

please consider have-a-heart traps, and releasing him elsewhere --

The problem with that is they become someone else's problem.

My parents live in an area where trapped animals are often released, mainly coons. They tend to head for houses because that's where they're used to finding food. They become a real pain, just like they were in their prior location.

As a concession to my mother and sisters I trap them in a hav-a-hart trap, put the trap in a large garbage bag, start sliding a second bag over the open end. Then I spray a bunch of ether in and pull the bag the rest of the way over the trap.

Soooo, as someone who has to deal with your kindness, I can only ask YOU think about what you suggest. You might believe it is the humane thing to do, but it is causing problems for other people. And other people end up killing them because they are over run with trapped and released pests.

I caught 2 opossums in the last 3 days using dry cat food in a live trap. But I've had good luck taking a 33 gallon trash can, with a few rocks in the bottom (so it's not top heavy) and a box outside for a step. Just throw a cut apple in the bottom. The opossum gets in, but can't jump out. Dispose of in your normal fashion.

When my sweetcorn is getting ripe in the summer, I always set a few box traps in it. I bait the traps with marshmellows coated with peanut butter. My normal catch ratio is about 6 coons:2 possums:1 skunk. Each animal is humanely dispached with a different method. When I see the gate down on a trap from the house in the morning, I load up my .22 and walk to the trap. A coon will get a single shot, perpendicular to the head, placed at the intersection of an "x" drawn between the eyes and the ears. A possum, which has a tiny pea-sized brain, gets a shot at this location but also a second shot behind the shoulder. I once had a possum rise up and run off a few moments after the single head shot, but none have got away after also getting the lung shot, and .22 ammo is still relatively inexpensive. If I notice a skunk in the trap I return to the house for a larger gun (16 ga shotgun with #6 or 7-1/2 shot) These smelly critters get a single head shot from 15 yards upwind. I have never had one spray, nor any damage to the traps. Some say that you can walk right up to the trap and throw a towel over it, then go drown them. Maybe so, but I aint willing to take a chance, at least until I use up a bunch of old shotgun ammo I have. Also, my creek is usually dried up in the summer and it is a long walk to the pond. A lot of corn-eating critters can thank me for a quick and painless trip to that big corn-patch in the sky. Please dont transport trapped animals to someone else's property as it is anything but humane for it promotes the spread of disease which kills far less humanely than a shotgun or rifle. Since the collapse of fur-prices, driven by the animal-lovers, many furbearer populations have exploded and deseases like rabbis and distemper run rampant. How much healthier those populations were when fur prices were high. Although these folks are well-meaning I am sure, they have caused great harm to most furbearer species.

Animals are also territorial, so if you just drop off a trapped animal into another's territory, you are setting it up for a fight or flight right from the get go. A small live trap can be submerged into a tall garbage can full of water - pretty painless way to go.

Well, tallyho, am giving up on Billy the Exterminator...doesn't look like he's taken the bait to bait your trap and catch your wily coyote:thumbsup:

Just FYI, I located a local fellow who LOVES to shoot coyotes. He passed my safety/hunting practice standards interview and has since taken 5 coyotes from my place. He comes out very early, has lures and calls and has about a 50% success rate. He comes out after letting things rest, typically kills a coyote, continues to come until a couple of consecutive times of not seeing anything, then lets things settle down again.

Glad I've found him, coyotes prey on neighbor's fowl and sheep, den up on my place. Keeps neighbors happy.

They have switched to using live rabbits for bait to try to keep possums from setting off the traps. We will see how that works.

The good part is that we have gotten rid of most of the possum in the area. :)

The first thing that goes through my mind is that you'd better not be checking the trap in the dark and not looking where you are stepping. A trapped rabbit sounds like perfect bait for a BIG snake.

The foxpens in our area are large tracts, one is about 800 acres, that are hunting leases for owners of fox hounds. They have 8' tall fences with a hotwire at the top and bottom and a cleared spot on each side of the fence.

They run their fox hounds for pleasure or competition in these pens. They do not fox hunt on horses. Foxes are very scarce in our area so they supplement them with coyotes.

Animals are not usually killed in these chases though it sometimes happens. The fox usually winds up safe in it's burrow and the hunt is concluded. The unlucky slow, sick or injured fox will usually have a swift death.

It's one thing for that to happen in the wild...it's nature and not much we can do about it and we shouldn't, but to pen animals up for a fox hunt is not much different than staging dog fights. That "swift death" is being torn apart by a pack of hunting dogs. Setting up a situation where that is allowed is disgusting. Penning them up to prevent them from killing livestock I agree with, but if you aren't prepared to give the old sick ones a quick and merciful death, like a bullet to the brain, then shoot them immediately once you catch them.

I realize that there are many people in the world who are totally against hunting or fishing or even eating meat. Many others hunt, fish and even butcher their own hogs or cattle and believe there is nothing wrong with this as long as they do as little as they can to make the animal suffer.

People hunting coyotes with dogs are not intentionally making the animal suffer and those who hunt them in foxpens that are several square miles large rarely ever have a dog catch one. The old or sick ones that the dogs catch would be eventually caught and killed by the other coyotes if the dogs didn't get them first.

I respect others who do not want to hunt or fish or are vegetarians and I do not want to try to change their feelings or their ways but they may try to understand that many people in the world feel differently than they do and God alone is the one who will judge us in the end for what we have done.

If you do not believe in a higher power then you must realize that the huge majority of people on earth who have different beliefs than you should be respected for what they believe.

I do not wish to turn this thread into a hunting/anti-hunting thread and hope others will respect my wishes.

Luckily we don't have big snakes like you have in Texas, especially the big ones I have seen in Big Bend. All we have are big alligators. And if the snake can get into the cage to eat the rabbit, then he will be too big to get out. :)

Since the title of your thread and your origional issue was possums, I'd have to say that you got the upper hand on that part of it.

I forgot to post the photo we took the other night when he tried to get in one of the smaller traps but couldn't fit. We have 3 larger traps out now but he hasn't been in the back in the last couple of nights.

Last night he was in my front yard about midnight about 10 feet from the front door. I loaded up the shotgun and eased the front door open then gently pushed on the glass storm door to open it and it just clicked. The wife had it locked. The click sent the coyote running and before I could find the door lock in the dark he was out of range.

Maybe tonight................

:laughing::laughing: So your wife does that too, huh? At 3:00 AM this morning I heard a coyote howling down in my gullies. He would howl a couple of times and then a bunch of dogs from surrounding neighbors would come back with a chorus of howls and barks. I just smiled while thinkin' of this thread and gently dozed back off to sleep with a lullaby of nighttime sounds of the country.:D
