any chance to get a few pics of this beast... have a few 9's hanging around looking to make themselves useful:D

Here is a pic. It mounts to a modified boom pole you can get from any TSC or similar store for $100 or less. To modify it all they did was weld a tube across to accept the pin that connects the gear box. I cant get a pic of it right now because its on my other tractor at another location being used to pull shrubs.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm leaning towards a Leinbach, but cant find any dealers close to Seattle. So I may have to by from the east coast and then pay the extra for shipping. Any dealers on the west coast you know of/
you will regret that choice if you have animals. Horses scratch on fence posts. once the auger is dull its junk. you get what you pay for. save your money and buy a good clamshell and some decent bars. your going to need them anyway

Not so fast....you can buy the Leinbach WITHOUT the inclouded auger. They quoted me a discount of $75 without the auger. Then buy one of their McMillen augers: McMillen Auger Bits Agricultural Style for PTO Drive Units
These have replaceable teeth and dig extremely well :D .

There is one on the Saint Louis Craigslist site for $450.00.

I bought mine from A-Z Sales in the STL area. I paid $550 I think...
636-575-6803. He is a guy selling them out of his shed. Good guy...

happyman, that site you gave me makes me happy too. I Iave found local Leinbach dealers since my last post, but they all get the item from back east and then pass on the shp. charge and local tax on top. This guy will ship for an extra $60 to Seattle. That is the best price I've found for the 7300 w/12" auger-$582. Thanx.

Going to the Puyallup Fair today with the kids and they always have trctors and implement reps. there. If I cant find a better deal, that company will be it.
I have soft dirt and not worried about the cutting edge. I can welld and can harden the tips if need be that is not a concern.

Glad to help :D.
That's what this place is all about.

I got the red and black one from TSC and it works pretty good on my little 22HP Kubota, but its been slow this spring, so I looked at the teeth and saw they were pretty dull. I got new ones from TSC, took them home and was all fired up to put them in when I started scratching my head. The replacements had two bolt holes but the PHD only had one! Upon closer inspection I realized my PHD used to have two. So I can't recommend the red and black one from TSC. I did get the teeth on with only one bolt but I know it won't last long.

...once the auger is dull its junk. you get what you pay for. save your money and buy a good clamshell and some decent bars. your going to need them anyway

It's the cutting teeth that do all the work. The auger flighting only helps to lift the spoil out of the hole. The auger point almost never wears out, but whatever phd you decide on, order at least 2 sets of replacement teeth at the same time (they're not exactly cheap either). I can dig about 50 to 60 holes max. in the hard pan clay we have around here before the teeth need replacing.

I currently have a Green Mfg. FM5500 with a 14" auger. Works good. Don't like the collar-type of pto attachment that you have to pull the ring back and try to push the shaft end onto the pto. I've had Befco and Danuser augers in the past, they all only worked as good as the condition of the cutting teeth.

If you have horses, you will always find a need for a phd for fencing repairs or the inevitable "honey, can we split that paddock in half so I can put another horse in there?":D:D

I've read about power down hydraulic post hole diggers. You need a rear remote to operate it, but suppose towork very well. Trouble is I can't find a site which sells those types. Any leads....?

Belltec makes a frame-guided hydraulic PHD that attaches to the 3pt hitch. But it's pricy and requires a 28 hp tractor with dual remote hydraulics.

BELLTEC Industries :: TM48 Post Hole Digger

Belltec makes less expensive ones that mount on the FEL. It requires 10-20 gpm hydraulic flow

BELLTEC Industries :: H-Series Auger Drives

I like this Rhino hydraulic PHD that mounts on the FEL. The low volume drive motor takes only 5-12 gpm from the hydraulic system which fits my Mahindra 5525 perfectly (it delivers 10.5 gpm)

Hydraulic Drive

When I get serious about redoing my fences on of these days, I plan to get that Rhino unit. I like the idea of mounting the PHD on the FEL to get down pressure. And with the PHD up front, you can see what you're doing. Also being able to reverse the auger rotation with the hydraulic unit is a big plus in my book. And I suspect the resale value of a hydraulic PHD is pretty good.

I've helped my neighbor plant an orchard using his JD 2640 and a pto-driven PHD. Didn't like the effort needed to remove a stuck auger.

PTO-driven PHDs are probably the cheapest and most dangerous implements
your can get for your tractor.

To add down pressure capability to a 3-pt PHD, you can buy a hyd cyl kit
to do that. You still have the problem with the lack of reversibilty, which
only a hydraulic PHD gives you. I have had both kinds and the hyd PHD is the
best and safest. All types are available at Worksaver's Home Page.

Thanks....I was looking for a picture as to how the power down hydraulic cylinder attaches. Still seems a bit fuzzy as to how the cylinder attachment generates downward force. Looks to be all solidly bolted together, with no "hinge" part to allow the arm to be forced towards the ground. Thanks again. I like the Belltec. Very heavy duty, and straight foreward. Easy to see why it would work so well. :D

Maybe this is a better picture than the others that you have seen. Land Pride has a detailed drawing of it on their website.

If you guys are talking in the 500 dollar range, then no use talking Belltec. I have a Belltec-it was 3700 bucks with a 9 inch rock bit. That price was 600 bucks cheaper than any of the other dealers I found--fella out of Junction Texas sells them. This not your neck of the woods.

Anyhow, these things are hinged and use the weight of the tractor. This sucker can drill. There's a thread from way back on TBN--fella has a pic of a hole he drilled in solid rock with his Belltec. I have drilled a few solid rock holes but it took me a while even with the rock bit. Don't know if I am being too easy on the pressure or my 5203 is not heavy enough.

Nevertheless, the OP stated he had easy drilling in dirt and unless he just wants to spend a pile of the feds worthless cash on a Cadillac, don't see he would be interested in a Belltec.
