Keith,

Good job and a very measured response. I have come to the decision that I don't care if Delta 3-2 buys a tractor or not. He asked a question, got lots of advice that he is not required to accept if he chooses not to, and responds with a hostile tone to those that are trying to help. This forum isn't the right place to make statements about "American Society" and "Political Correctness," it's about tractors and those with experience to help those that don't have that same experience...like me. I am baffled by Delta 3-2's tone and continue applaud the crew on TBN for still trying to help him out....against his wishes I guess. Others can offer him advice, but this will be my last post or response to Delta 3-2 and I'm pretty sure that will be fine with him. Dyer, retired

Welcome Delta:

I think that those prices that you got must be OK. You called around to get price quotes as you should, and that seems to be what dealers are asking for in your area. Only way for you to know for sure is to keep calling around and do more research, then try to bargain between dealers to see if you can get them to go lower or to offer something to get your business. Although you didn't ask for opinions regarding which model BX to buy, I always think that one should purchase a tractor with the most horsepower that they can afford. It will allow the tractor to run a snowblower and a mower easier. So keep up the search. Good luck.

People here are trying to be helpful. Nobody here is trying to dis you. You asked for advice and they gave you their advice. Just because it isn't the advice you are looking for is not a reason to act that way. This is not a place where you find a lot of PC, but you do find a good deal of common courtesy. Nobody asked you to be PC, they just asked for you not to be obnoxious. Communicating online is a lot different than communicating face to face. You don't have facial expressions, tone of voice, instant clarification on things not quite understood. All we have are words, and a little help from those smiley faces. That's what helped us know that drtydeed's comment to Keith was a joke, not a serious statement. It took me some time to figure out that my written words can come across in different ways to different people, unless I make sure to put them in a way that is really clear and the tone is not debatable. The way I put words together in writing has to be different than the way I put words together in face to face speech to make up for some of those missing cues. I have the feeling that if the ten or so men in this thread were all in the same room, you wouldn't say the stuff like this to the faces of all of them at once:

What I asked your opinions on was whether the quoted prices for tractors "as equipped" were reasonable. Instead the answers have all turned to adding undesired equipment, it's usefulness, etc. One gentleman even suggested I add a freakin' backhoe to the unit. Gee...do you ever consider the STORAGE of this stuff ? Or do you guys buy it and let it sit out in the elements ?DG

Other than Hulk Hogan, I don't think most men would be very confident about saying that straight to the faces of ten other men. Just because a person is on the other side of a computer screen, and nobody can see his face, is not a good reason to suddenly feel a rush of bravery about spouting off.

Nobody's saying you have to agree with their opinions about tractors. They are just saying that they'd appreciate some basic civility.

Hello All !
Here are the prices my local dealer quoted me:

1*BX 1850 with 54 inch deck = $9300.00 + 6 % tax of $558.00 = $9858 delivered.

2*BX 2350 with 60 inch deck = $10,500 + 6 % tax of $630.00 = $11,130 delivered.
What do you think about the above prices ?
DG
1* My local dealer offered me the BX1850 with 54'' mower for $9100 plus tax last fall.
A couple of months later he was advertising it in the paper on sale for $8595 plus tax but he was to late for me as I had just bought a new BX1500 with a 48'' deck for $7750 including tax.
Appears to me the BX1850 at $9300 is right about full retail price = I think I would shop around for something better.

2*I bought a new BX23 on 11 / 4 / 2004
My cost break down for the tractor itself and the 60'' mmm was $9400 plus tax.
I think it's worth a try trying to shave some off the $10500 price. I'd do more shopping around.
Between the 2 tractors I'd vote the Bx2350 as the best price winner.

1*I really can't see purchasing a tractor without the FEL.
*I didn't know they made tractors with out FELs.
2**I debated the bx1850 vs the bx2350.
**I didn't do any debating between the BX1500 and the BX23 when I bought the BX1500 since I already had a BX23.
3***I'm glad I did as I have enjoyed the extra power and foot room.
***I enjoy the BX1500 and the BX23 equally.
To me it's not a contest between them but rather it's a matter of them complementing
each other.

I'm with offcamber on the FEL. I really can't see purchasing a tractor without the FEL. It is almost as useful as the MMM. Also if you add a front blade or blower for snow removal you will need the hydraulics that come with the FEL.
I debated the 1850 vs the 2350 and went with the extra HP and room as the foot well /cockpit of the 2350 is noticabily roomer that the 1850. I'm glad I did as I have enjoyed the extra power and foot room.
Price paid was around $13,000.00 with 60mm and FEL last fall.

Yepp mine sits outside under a tarp...if your buying that size tractor most would assume you have plenty of land to store it on.
I would reread what everyone has suggested before you dismiss it...if all your doing is mowing and snowblowing you could save a lot of money and buy a Craftsman Lawn tractor and a snowblower attachment....

Oh and your prices look average....so go with either one...
Or A CC for $7879
Or a Bolens for $1248.

I've been reading this forum for several months now and found the following:
1) Any question about what to buy will quickly morph into recommendations to buy more than intended.
2) No one ever says they bought too much. It's incredible that no one every buys more tractor or attachments than they need.
3) The posts recommending buying more outnumber those recommending less by at least 10 to 1.
4) Any question about what to buy relating to a BX will virtually always have someone recommending buying one with a backhoe.
5) Many folks have rationales about why initial cost doesn't matter; generally along the lines of you get more when you sell it. That of course assumes that you will be selling the tractor. But more importantly it doesn't recognize that generally the more you spend the more the depreciation will be, and the larger the loss if and when you do sell. And it certainly doesn't take into account the time value of money.

"that generally the more you spend the more the depreciation will be, and the larger the loss if and when you do sell"

That is the problem. Since some of us are older and have gone through at least one tractor, we know better. Farm tractors don't really depreciate in money terms, like automobiles. I sold a 1985 Kubota B-5200 last year (to buy a BX24) at a slightly higher price in dollars than I paid for it. (sure the dollar was worth more then). I watched Ebay sales and I noticed that the same tractor with a FEL was selling at twice the price of the same tractor with a FEL at the time. I could have bought the FEL with the B5200 at the time, for a bit extra. I didn't and adding it on a year later was too expensive. Two years later it was even more expensive, etc., etc. until you couldn't find the FEL anymore.
