Problems with Neighbors dog .. What would you do?

Well obviously I'm not in favor of shooting this dog or any dog for that matter If I was ..... well he'd be dead by now ... I will only do that if for some reason he would become violent and become a threat to us or the livestock. A mean dog does no one any good and to let a mean one continue to live ... well I'd feel real bad if the other neighbors little grand girls got attacked by a dog that I knew was mean and I could have maybe prevented it.

I'm at this point find myself wondering where he is layed up ... maybe he got the message when I ran him off.

My own kids have some pretty big dogs on one of our farms and they know I will shoot them if threatened. Dogs can be unpredictable and I have seen it first hand, my brother was bitten pretty bad by one of our dogs with whom we had never had any problems.
I hope to never have to shoot another dog, but will if needed. If this seems heartless to some, I can live with that.

I agree. We have had dogs (my parents till have them). While I would be very sad if one was shot, if it was chasing livestock I would understand.
Animal control out here is the sheriff's gun and there is no safe way to know if you can approach a loose dog that is chasing livestock.

Just some observations.

I have seen dogs starving and it is not a pretty sight, we had one wander onto our property that was literally on his last leg and could no longer eat. He was obviously diseased and old; sometimes a quick death is a kindness.

You do no one any good by chasing a stray dog off, you may find it comforting to hope or believe he will be OK and you really don't want to face the tough decision of what to do. In all likelihood, he will just be chased from one place to the other until he can no longer go and die a cruel death in some field or road ditch somewhere. Some can be saved and some can't.

Many of us don't have the luxury of animal control and with the crime rate being what it is and budget cuts, local Sheriff's Departments aren't going to be able to help even if they want to.

Country living is great, but one of the down sides is that just sometimes you just have to suck it up and handle your problems on your own. Not everyone belongs in the country; country living is about more than location.

I guess each person has to decide how best to handle their own situation.

I'd call the local animal shelter and get them to do something.

Yeah...but in the UK you could go to prison for defending yourself!!
I love Scotland (was in Greenock on the River Clyde back in 1971 or 78), but the UK's laws...Hmmmmm...

No, you wouldn't have gone to prison for defending yourself, but by the sounds of the thread, the owner wanted the dog shot without any provocation, which would end in a harsh punishment in the UK.

One law I wouldn't mind trading with you Americans however, is car inspection tests!

I believe you only have one every time the ownership is changed, but we have one every year!

I also recall a British Military veteran being imprisoned after delivering a firearm (shotgun, I believe) he had found to the local police station.
You folks need to remind your leaders on the Magna Carta!!

Some states (including Pennsylvania) require annual car inspections too.
