Propane Prices

I have seen signs in northern WI .89. Pre buying S WI is 1.15. I wonder if I am getting screwed. There are people in UP and WI cheaper. WI guy says he can get it all winter, says 2 years ago when people couldn't get it or renigged, he didn't. Dunno.

Michigan refused to adopt the Federal standards for chunk wood burning appliances. Thats all people in the upper peninsula use for heat.
While many people do use wood to heat in the UP, it is minority. People in down don't that much, they have natural gas, and smaller yards.

Pre-pay contract price from my provider is $1.15/gal cash or check for Sept - Aprril to a leased tank. $1.20/gal if by credit card. Last year their pre-pay price was $1.19 but by mid-January the non-contract price was down to $1.02. Of course I have no idea what will happen with prices this winter. For peace of mind I will probably just go with the $1.15 pre-pay.

Always a gamble in Wisconsin...you have to decide before you know how much will be used for grain drying and how cold the winter will be. Since the disaster of a few years ago I know the suppliers have added a lot of storage capacity but I went for the pre-pay option again this year ($1.14). Cap price was 1.44 plus the $70 to get into that program...always a coin-flip when all things are considered.

Those 20# tanks are hardly an indicator...they have always been over-priced simply because of the labor involved in filling them (about the same amount of time as getting a 500gal re-filled) plus the convenience in using them during camping season.

As I related is was "for what is was worth"...I really doubt the cost of their labor has risen that much in that time period...

To which I will reply with charge what the market will bear. Cash price for propane around here right now is 99cents for summer fill. Hasn't moved much all summer.

After reading this thread a few weeks ago, my wife called for fillup on our 1000 gal tank. It generally gets down to 40-45% and we fill to around 80% so we use 300-400 gallon per year (heating, stovetop cooking). She was quoted $1.50/gal, then $1.38 when they realized 1000 gal tank. The driver was able to make it out a week later and gave us $1.30/gal. It might go cheaper, but could easily go the other way too.
