Checked today, propane is $1.18 per gal. I have been contemplating a heat pump, what to do what to do?

Be careful about a heat pump as your only heat source. If the temp drops below 20 F at any point it essentially stops working. Most heat pumps have a heat element inside to cope with those days, but expect your electric bill to skyrocket big time if that ever turns on (they run 15 kw/h or more).

Something I wish I knew when I bought my last house with only a heat pump.

Are you sure you guys are comparing apples to apples? Some are quoting $/pound, other are $/gallon. I've never seen propane sold by the gallon, so I'm wondering if that's what the discrepancy is in the prices.

Here all prices are per gallon. I can't imagine paying $1.49 (or even $.90) per pound, seeing as there are ~4.2 pounds per gallon at 70F.

We have formed a co-op of about 45 property owners to negotiate a contract price for propane. One local company has offered a price of $.75/gallon above the current wholesale price, which they quoted today as $.75, making the delivered price $1.50. Since the wholesale price fluctuates daily, we would like to finds some independent information source as to what that price really is. Does anyone know where to find that information? I realize it will vary by location, but there must be some source other than the propane supplier.

Around here Star Energy is buying up all the smaller distributors. Prices have come down some, but when the competition is gone, then what will happen?

I just found that "Suburban Propane" in central TN has evidently bought out the local supplier that I bought our underground tank from. They quoted $2.59/gal until they found out that I owned my tank, then the price dropped to $1.99! Another local supplier that had been recommended to me quoted $1.59, or $1.29 if I own my tank! I knew there would be some variation in pricing, but that is kinda extreme!!

In PA I was quoted $1.89 pre-buy for minimum of 300 gallons. Last year I bought it for the same price but since I added heat to the garage I think I will start with 500 gallons for this year. At the end of the heating season I had used up my pre-buy of 400 gallons and when they filled me up they charged the same $1.89 a gallon.

Pre-pay price here for upcoming winter is 1.499/gal, 500 gallon minimum, leased tank. This is the same price as last winter.
