How are y'all getting 20# of propane in a 20# tank? A full tank will only hold 16# (80% fill to allow for expansion). The 15# is 75% fill so 5% short of full. In the summer time my supplier will only fill above ground tanks to 70% due to expansion of the liquid.
3Ts,

A 20 Lb is actually capable of holding more than 20 Lbs and got named "20 Lb tank" because net weight of a full tank is 20 Lbs when filled by ethical supplier who places "empty" tank on scale and tares it out before filling to now 20 Lbs of propane liquid.

Depending on where you live, the local propane supplier, for larger tanks will choose a max fill percentage so the tank does not experience blow off when tank and contents are exposed to summer heat. In the mountains of NC, I get filled to 80% and occasionaly to 85% because the tank, while it above ground, is always shaded by trees and never sees direct sun and extremely unusual for daily high to hit 100'F.

We had the natural gas line go through our neighborhood. Before that we were paying about $2000 a month in propane and 500gal tank. Yes each month. They wouldn't let us have a bigger tank. We're in an old brick farm house. After we switched we now have $200 including the install fee. or less for heating bills. Running the A/C is more expensive now. I always thought that propane had more BTUs in it. I guess that I was wrong or maybe gas is more efficient. Whatever. When we use no heat we do pay on the installation fee still $55.

Heating cost, regardless of type, should always be calculated over the entire year.

Total annual cost divided by twelve to get monthly.

Although gasoline prices have dropped a lot in the past couple months, home heating LP has not. My tank got topped off at $2.059 / gallon yesterday Aug 1. Last year's summer top-off was about 60 cents less per gallon than this year's. This winter's pre-pay price will be $2.149.
