John Deere 850
Re: Proper Oil

I recently bought a John Deere 850 Compact Utility tractor with the 3-cyl 2-stroke Yanmar diesel engine and ordered the service manuals for it.

The mfg. states it uses, depending on the temperature, oils with the following API ratings: CD/SD, CC/SE, CC/SD and SD. For winter use here in Virginia (-15 to +32 deg.) I would choose the 10W-30 the book recommends, but herein lies the problem.

The API ratings above are obsolete mostly for !@#$%^& environmental reasons. I did a quick search of the internet and soon found the new classifications and surmise I should be using CF-2. Wonderful, except the local stores that sell diesel oil, e.g. Tractor Supply, Walmart sell 15W-40 oil not 10W-30 or straight weight 10W that my shop manuals call for.

Comments appreciated.

If it were mine I would run either Mobil Delvac 1300 in 15w40 (economical oil) or Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic in 5w40 if I wanted the best. I run Delvac 1 nearly universally here in my trucks, tractors, generators, ATV, and UTV.

2 stroke?

CJ-4 is the current diesel oil spec. John Deere line of "Plus 50 II" oil (dino, CJ-4) is available in 10W-30. They also have 0W-40 full synthetic.

If it were me, I would disregard the 10W-30 book recommendation and use a brand name 15W-40 CJ-4 dino oil all year unless cold starting is an issue in which case I would use a brand name 5W-40 CJ-4 synthetic oil for easier cold starting.

You can never go wrong with the Deere Plus 50 oils. If you can afford it.

Edit: Looks like I typed too slowly, KennedyDiesel said pretty much the same thing only faster.

Speaking of oil I'd better get after mine. I'm across 400 hrs and due for a change...

CJ-4 overrides all the older specs.

i personally always used 10W30 on my old JD970. did it for 14 years and 1,400 hours and never had any engine issues.

Our summers were never TOO hot and the winters are never too cold here in N. Idaho.

If i lived in hotter climate i might go for the 10W40 or 15W40.

In So Cal i would prob use 80W90 HEHEHE... just joking. NOt sure how anyone can live somewhere where its 105F for 6 months of the year.

I had a YM240, which is roughly the Yanmar equivalent of your JD850. I used 15W40 Rotella T year round. But that said, I also had an oil pan heater. Without that, I'd probably have gone with the synthetic Rotella 5W40

I live in central PA which has similar/worse temperature extremes than Virginia. The local Deere dealers recommend using JD 15W-40 Plus 50-II year around so that is what I use in all my tractors. IIRC, it is a synthetic blend and your oil change intervals are much longer if you use this oil --- google Deere Plus 50-II oil and read all about this relatively new product. My 2010 4320 operators manual also specifies longer change intervals when using the Plus 50-II oil along with JD filters.
