Property Taxes ... How Much are yours

What I hate about property taxes is I paid for my renters kids education while at the same time i don't have any kids.
Another thing People who don't own property or pay real estate taxes are permited to vote for property tax increases.

If you are paying rent, you are also paying property taxes.

What I don't understand/like is that if you have two bits of property in two areas. You can only vote where your primary residence is, so how do you vote on anything that would affect you?

I think it should go back to the good old days, you get so many votes for how much land you own. ;)

1-2*I used to own property in 2 different school districts but could only vote on tax issuers in the one I lived in .
True taxation without representation
3*Sounds ok in theory but don't necessarily work out that way.
Many a time I had to pay increased property taxes but was unable to raise my tenants rent accordingly.

How does the "school loan" work now a days? Do they still have VEAP for veterans?

You're telling your age here! :)

I was under the VEAP program when I went in in 1984. It was a huge ripoff! HUGE RIPOFF...did I mention how huge a ripoff it was? Anyhow, without getting into the gist of it, the VEAP program is long gone now. They realized the mistake in 90-91 and sent out a naval message to all on VEAP program, asking if they'd like to move to the Mont. GI bill or whatever it was called. Well, needless to say, I was smack dab in the middle of Desert Shield...then Desert Storm, in theater and didn't get the message. So, I was skrewed! Had to finish out my years on VEAP. Still finished college while I was in, but it cost me a lot more money than it did buddies who came in at an earlier or later time than I did and was on a different program. :(

well I did not read everyones because it was making me sick to see how bad mine are. 1/2 acre 1300 square foot home ( still needs alot of work, so value low for area. It was the cheapest house I could find that I could move into and didn't need gutting) pay $4700 a year! On top off that I have city water and sewr bill every other month at $321 if I don't go over 6000 gallons a month

Wow, sickening. I just read my post from a couple of years ago and I'm paying right around 35% more in property taxes on 6 pieces of properties now than I was then (I didn't have 6 then, but the percentages all went up). How does that work when I'm told my property values have gone down yet my property taxes continue to go up and up and up???

As usual, I fill out the forms like every year to contest my property tax increases (exercise in futility for the most part). And, as usual, I get a break on 1 or two properties. One should have been a 'no-brainer' for our incompetent auditor. I'd just purchased the home 5 months previous to the tax bill coming out. The house was built in 1926, so it hasn't changed much in those 5 months. Anyway, the totally incompetent auditor taxed me on double the price I paid for the home!! I did get that one reduced to being taxed based on what I paid for it and the auditor was just voted out. His previous experience was only as a TV weather forecaster. My contention is that you need to be a little more accurate in calculating property taxes than you do in forecasting the weather to keep your job. Clearly, a lot of others agreed since he lost by a landslide.

When I moved in in 1984 I was paying 3,200/yr., now it is a bit over 12,000. our fat pig of a governor past a law that taxes are Caped at 2% increases per year. Where do I get that 2% from? Out schools are stuffed with ******** and stupid in two languages, the cops and teachers are overpaid. We spend 25,000 a year per student and they are no smarter than horse apples.

Here in Vermont they give us a slow comfortable $%^&. My taxes are $3500 on 9 acres. We also have 7% sales tax, and the highest income tax burden in the country. YIKES!

Not even close my friend...... $5500 for 8 acres in NY, and our sales tax is 8-3/4%. Erie county, TAX CAPITAL of the country........

I find all this very interesting, taxes, taxes, all over the world, increasing all the time ...
I own a small sea-side property in western France worth 271.750 $. I don't know how it is with you, but here in France I pay three kinds of taxes :
property tax (for the owner) 920 $
tax for living there 950 $
capital tax (ISF) : 1.500 $
That is a total of 3.370 US $ for 2010, which doesn't seem so bad now I've read your figures !

You guys say acres of land. I pay 12,000 for 175 x 50 feet or 54.7 x 15.6 meters.
Then we have federal income tax, state income tax, social security tax, Medicare tax, unemployment tax, phone tax, 7.5% sales tax and they want ever more. Each tax level clams it is only a small tax that they take, add it all up and it amounts to half or more of our income that the free loaders steal from us.

Wow!
Property taxes here in N.Y.S. are crazy, just received my school taxes up 16.9% over last year! Local sales tax is 8%. Taxes an ONE pack of cigarettes is $4.59! My town taxes will be coming in a few months too. Don't know when but in the future some time I will not be able to afford my home, seniors apartment will be my last home, sad huh?

I just got the tax bill for and old house in town thet I haven't had anyone in for a couple of years. It is $249 per half. There is just a city lot and the house. Don't sound like I got it real bad. The 108 acre farm comes in at about $800 per year, I got an agricultural break because a neighbor farms all the tillable ground, so all in all I guess I can't complain too much.

Property values have fallen, in some case dramatically... yet, my tax bills continue to increase even though I contest each year.

County just started $50 application fee to contest.

$12,800 and $9,000.... this year.

I have the home with the $12,800 tax bill rented for $1800 a month... 7 months rent just to cover this year's tax...

the $9,000 home is 1725 square feet on a steep acre and the home is circa 1957.

1.5 acres with a 1450 sq. ft. brick rancher built in 1954 valued @ $135,200...$797.68/yr.

102 acres valued @ $484,500 with farm use valuation set @ $56,900...$335.71/yr.

After reading some of the responses to this thread I'm gonna quit complaining as much...

As a point of comparison in South Australia about 30 mins drive from Capital City on my 10 acres with a average brick home I pay $1700 a year......No school taxes that's what you pay income tax for. Very little in state taxes as it is a private residence. As municipal water does not cross the front on my property no water or sewage charge (If it did cross the front of my property I would be charged if I used it or not).
So from what I have been reading in this forum I guess we are pretty lucky.....and with unemployment down around 4 % and mining boom creating more jobs than there are workers to fill them looks like the place to live at the moment...:laughing:

The county I in live the property taxes are .50/100. With property tax, sales tax, utility taxes and 911 taxes the bill comes to about $3,000. My concern is what is being accomplished with the money. Half goes to schools the cost per child is $9,500/year of which the county pays $4,000. 80% of the school budget is salaries. Much goes to administration; last year to do assessments was $1million. Then there is paying for others bad behavior, sheriff $5million, $1million jail, courts, $2million group home, social services (the past and current director has said 60% of these people are mentally and physically able to work). While not all county money social services budget is $62million, this does not include Medicare. Fire and Rescue is mostly volunteer.

Those I know living in Austria never complain about property tax and can't understand how I can pay the taxes I do...

Apparantly, the government there makes most of the money on import duties and consumption/value added taxes...

The thinking is it is counter productive to tax someone from their home and many homes have been in the same family for many generations...

And they get better roads, better security, and health care. If we added it all up, we are probably way behind Europe on a lot of issues.
