pto driven log splitter

I still wonder if anybody uses the possibility of adding the return oil to speed up hydraulic splitters?

how many gpm pump do I need to run a 3 point hitch log splitter with a 20 hp tractor?

Run it how?? With remotes, or a pto pump??

Anything will run it, gpm determines how fast it will run...

SuperSplit makes the best mechanical splitter in my book. I've used mine for 15 years now.

This works on a 2 flywheel with drive belts that ride the outside rims. When a lever is activated, a pinion engages a straight rack gear that rides the beam until a kicker cam throws the rack out of the pinion at farthest travel of the rack. The rack has a butt plate attached that drives the log into a splitter as per usual. Working pressure on flywheels driven by 5.5HP motor is 25-30000 lbs depending on flywheel and engine. Spring loaded retract time is instantaneous, split time is fast.

The only thing I can bad is their pricey when you total the cost of all components individually. Rack and pinion goes for a measly 180$ a pair, and the machine is $2000 +.

So the best splitter in my book is also the easiest to home build.

Andy

Problem is, if you have big tough wood to split, (like I do) they are far from the best splitter! I need a splitter that will split EVERYTHING, so after trying a SS I passed on one...

Rob, going by his thread title I assume he means using a PTO pump.

I built one to use on a 30HP Kubota B2910. I used a 22gpm PTO pump. I loved it. Cycle times were great and it had tremendous splitting power.

Here's a couple pics.

HP=(psi*gpm)/1714

If you are going to use a 2 stage pump you have the horsepower for a 28gpm 'log splitter pump'

If you are using a single stage pto pump I'd imagine you'd be looking at 12 gpm or so at 2500 psi.

Make sure you size it based on pto hp and not engine hp.

My TW3HD splitter has a Prince "single stage" pto driven pump, it calls for 30 pto hp for full power to the 5" ram. It's an absolute brute of a splitter and has pushed anything I can get onto the beam, right through the 4-way wedge! Timber Wolf wedges may be expensive, but they are the best/strongest too,

I love this splitter!

Keep in mind, if you are going to use a bigger hydraulic pump, you have to size up the fittings and hoses, also the inlet and outlet of the ram too, or those bottle necks will slooow the flow and make a lot of heat... Another thing, stay away from using 90* elbo's too... Slow flow = slow ram...

I would think that 90 degree elbows would be more of a problem in terms of slowing flow than 45's ...

Nice splitter BTW

Thanks for catching that! I corrected it! lol

It's a GREAT splitter, I don't think I over paid for in one bit, as it will easily last me the rest of my life and the best part is, my wife really likes running it!! lol
