PTO Problem

Hello,
I just bought a new brush mower today and am having trouble getting it hooked up to my tractor. I have used the PTO for several other implements and they have all had a little button to push in order to lock the PTO drive shaft onto the tractor. The mower doesn't have one of these. There is a knob that is textured in a way that looks like it should be able to be turned or something but nothing I do allows the shaft to slip into the drive.

Any ideas...?

The twist couplers are very similar to the old button-style versions, but have a rotating cover that depresses the button. On one of mine, I actually took the twist coupling off, and just use it as a push-button style.

Spraying penetrating oil into the mechanism can help, too, but I just found it easier to remove the cover.

By "knob", do you mean a collar?
If so, it could either rotate (as 284 International wrote) or it may require being pulled toward the implement while the drive shaft yoke is being pushed on to the tractor's PTO stub shaft.

What Roy said. I've never seen the "twist" version, but the PTO shaft for my tiller has a collar at each end of the fitting. Moving either collar toward the other releases the lock. It's a great system, actually--I push the rear collar forward when connecting the shaft, and pull the front collar aft when disconnecting.

There is actually a fourth type of coupling where you pull the collar back to slide it on the PTO, then once it's on you slide the collar forward and it locks on. The collar isn't spring loaded so it stays in whatever position you put it. It's kind of an oddball, but we have some equipment that is like this.
