For those interested. 1 picture is of tractor side the other is of implement side.

Thanks for posting photos. That's the 1st time I've seen a photo of a rotary mower driveline especially a Bush Hog with no safety device on it

Maybe the slip clutch is missing. A spline to spline slip clutch would go right on there?

I guess you could say itç—´ missing as there is not one on it. However I know this one did not have one when new.
I just recently purchased another Bush Hog (brand) 6 foot from a friend and he is the original owner with no slip clutch either.
To answer your question yes I think a splined slip clutch is what would be needed. I guess female on one side and male on the other. Then I assume I will probably have to shorten the drive shaft?

I know this is kind of an older post but after thinking about it an talking around here I thought I'd look into putting a slip clutch in line on my PTO shaft. Most appear to be mounted back near the rear of the PTO shaft and the gear box of the Bush Hog. MY PTO shaft attaches to the gear box (both of which have 6 splines) and is pinned together with a bolt and nut. Attn: This is not a shear pin as I mentioned it is splined and the bolt just holds then together. I would need to have a slip clutch with a male end a female end both having holes for a bolt. I don't seem be able to find such a critter. Do I need some sort of adapter or something? Thanks

No Sir, my pto shaft to gear box has no push button detent to hold it on just a thru hole for a bolt nut. In order to use this clutch I would need to replace at at least one end of my shaft yoke. I can’t really see the other side of the slip clutch so I do not know what might be needed. I think there is a pic of my connection earlier in this thread. Hopefully it will be one of the times where a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

You might have to consider drilling appropriate holes in slip clutch that mwayne posted a link to OR install slip clutch on tractor pto shaft instead of tiller GB shaft!

The OP of this thread either has a finish mower or someone put a finish mower driveshaft on his mower. On a finish mower the belts serve as protection so both ends of the drive shaft are splined with no slip clutch or shear pin.

Tractor Guy that’s not proper telling someone else what equipment they have rather than asking or suggesting to them first. Very easy could have suggested to me my equipment could have been altered from the original configuration. I purchased both from original owners in original configuration. The 5’ is either a 502 or 600. Not a finish mower nor SQ600. It’s a very heavy built unit. I purchased it an the tractor together both were approximately 6-7 years old as they were purchased somewhere around the same time. My 6’ is a 306 model and weighs in at around 1,000 lbs. The fellow I bought it from worked at the local Bush Hog dealer and he purchased it new. It also is in the same configuration as was when he purchased it new. I spoke with a Bush Hog rep. at the 2019 National Farm Machinery in Louisville and he said many Bush Hogs went out the door without a slip clutch or shear bolt.

What isn't "PROPER" is having NO protection for striking immovable objects.

IF Bush Hog is sending out brush mowers with shafts that have no shear bolt or slip clutch I would be very interested in knowing why.

Hope you don't shear the PTO in your tractor due to having a wrong shaft.

The OP knows he needs a clutch, so why are you burning him?
Either help or move on.

I have the shaft that came on my equipment new so it is not “the wrong shaft” A quick note Both these Bush Hogs are very old. My 306 is nearly 50 or maybe more. My 502 or 600 is 40ish. My guess is things were a little different then when they were sold/bought. 1) There were not as many lawyers and 2) Maybe the end user knew how to use them properly. Something that I think helps is I Bush Hog very high. I am not mowing a lawn so I don’t try to mow close. Never had an issue since 85 but I do recognize the benefits of a slip clutch thus this post hoping to glean info. Thanks

Not trying to "burn" anybody or start any argument. I'm just stating facts. If somebody wants to gamble the PTO on their tractor by saving a couple hundred bucks on a proper driveshaft then so be it.

Sorry I made an assumption on your equipment and offended you bones66. I stand by my statement you have the wrong shaft for a brush mower.

Geeez, I’m trying to find a slip clutch. That is the purpose of my post. If you read my post I have never denied it would be wise if I had one so I’m not gambling I’m trying not to gambler

Even though if you look at the diagram you will see my exact PTO shaft. How can it be the wrong one??? Bush Hog put them on from the factory they have a part number etc.

He's just being a t****, can't help it.

I'm fairly sure you're not going to find that exact clutch anymore. Those parts are either outdated or discontinued. Best advice is what was suggested earlier. Figure out how to modify your current PTO to accept a clutch that's available. Or just buy an entire new PTO with clutch.

Maybe others can help GL either way.

I am not trying to be a dick. I guess like others I was unaware Bush Hog ever delivered a mower like this.

I was trying to point out that this type shaft would normally only come on a finish mower which has belts to provide the slip protection.

Looking more at the conversation and parts list it doesn't look like any reasonable way to update without replacing the gearbox and driveshaft since they didn't have the groove in the input shaft.

Sorry to offend you guys.

There are adapters available for this..
Would extend the length some but the pto shaft can be shortened if needed.
