Thanks for all the help. It is a weasler clutch, just not sure what it does yet. Bandit is once again promising to call me "right" back. That was half and hour ago. It seems that the last PTO chipper they sold was in 08 although they are still offered. These things seem to be very scarce and I have to wonder why?

It's another project (and expense) that I don't need, but maybe a twin disk clutch should just be added to save the JD PTO clutch and brake.
Given that it's hooked to a 1000+ lb flywheel, it is sure to be a slip and overrunning clutch. If it is not clicking when you spin it in the "wrong direction" it is probably not overrunning properly.
Either way, loosen the bolts and do as the directions say to set it up.

Thanks. Man, am I frustrated. Nothing from Bandit.

So I called Weasler. Same BS, crap, starts all over again. I just can't believe that so many people are so utterly clueless, and have some misguided belief that putting you through to someones VM is in any way accomplishing anything useful. Totally, unfreaking, unbelievable! Why don't they just say. We have a very few capable people in our employ and it's virtually impossible to speak with them, so best not even try, for they are either, not in the office, on vacation, at lunch, in a meeting or on the phone (with someone (obviously) far more fortunate (or important) than I).

At least I can say that many American Companies still have a receptionist, that can often find you real live blood in the office. She has some idea of who knows what. Good luck, finding that in Canada any more.

So sorry, Terry and aczlan, it is clear that NO ONE else in this thread will acknowledge that you have pointed out the exact manufacturer and model of this clutch! In my book, the manufacturer of something is the best place to obtain operating and maintenance instructions (and a description of how it functions).

I realize that, and am very appreciative. At this point it has been infinitely more useful then (attempted) contact with the manufacturers.

Did you follow the service instructions on the Weasler link they he posted above?

I don't clearly understand what they are talking about in Marketing Jargon. I still don't know if I have a free running option on my clutch. I would like to know what that (my) particular clutch is actually supposed to do in my application given the particular chipper and tractor/PTO setup.

Here is my limited understanding based on the marketing description: It does three things. 1)Your chipper takes a lot of torque and momentum to run. It achieves this with a big old flywheel. It takes a lot of torque to get that flywheel turning which makes it hard to get it going at lower tractor RPMS. So the slip clutch allows slippage as your tractor PTO starts that big flywheel going around so that you don't have to dump the clutch at mid throttle. Once the flywheel is going it no longer slips. 2) Surely the second function is to eliminate shock loads to your tractor when the chipper engages something large or hard. 3) The third purpose is presumably that it acts as an overrunning clutch so when your PTO RPMs drop the flywheel can keep spinning without driving torque back through the PTO. If you slow your PTO RPMs down and still hear the chipper/flywheel spinning fairly fast then the overrunning feature is working.

Thanks. I never dared slowing down the RPM without the PTO having been disengaged first. I really should not use this thing until I understand all the ins and outs and know that things function the way they are supposed to. But I could not resist.

I have to check whether the 6200 has any kind of modulated PTO for a soft start.

I am glad that the chipper has belts that should alleviate some of the shock created by some pretty violent activity.

I think as long as you engage your PTO smoothly and increase RPMs smoothly you should be fine.........just like starting a manual vehicle with a big load in it.

The PTO on my tractor is hydraulic with a lever that engages it electrically. (I think it is called something like 'electrically activate hydraulic independant PTO). It is a progressive lever. In other words it engages the PTO incrementally. So when I'm starting up my rotary cutter I have the tractor at idle and slowly move the lever forward and I can start the mower spinning as slowly and smoothly as I want to. Now, that's almost no load at all so if your PTO is like mine you'd slowly engage it but you'd also have to be adding RPMs steadly to get that flywheel going, again, just like a manual truck with a heavy load in it. The difference is that the clutch is a lever in your hand. Also, on my tractor the PTO is independent of the rest of the drive train. Which I like.

If your PTO is hydraulic and independent and if the chipper is belt driven and your slip clutch is working then you have multiple levels of protection from shock loads.
