Chipper PTO Wood Chipper upgrade

Here's a quick update. I had closed a deal to buy a Valby CH170 and while discussing the hydraulic couplings it came out that I was going to use the chipper on my B2910. The dealer told be I was really getting the wrong chipper. Too heavy for my tractor. He shut down the deal, and I thanked him for it - another reason to work with good dealers.

I'm now waiting on a Salsco 824. Stay tuned for a report when I get it.

Great choice! Who did you order it from and is that where you were buying the Valby? How many hp is the B2910? If it is about 29hp it will work great.

I'm getting it through Chappell Tractor in Milford NH. The 2910 is 30HP, with appropriate reduction by the time it gets to the PTO, but I think the loss is minimal for a chipper since the tractor is just sitting there. The lift capacity is 1300lbs at 24" behind the lift pins.

[Hello This is the first time at this site and it is very interesting and informative .. I have a Kioti 50 and am looking to get a chipper for the rear. It has about 40 PTO HP and a 2300 Lb. lift. Going through the discussions it would seem that the Salsco 826 model would work well on it. Are their any other options? I suppose that I want to get the most bang for my buck. I am from the Monadnock area and know several of the dealers around here. Any info is appreciated Thank's Also seems that I had replied to Garys query and all that I had wanted was to post this question so any info on how to post would be usefull !!

After a lot of looking I decided to go with the Bear Cat PTO model 72854 8" hydro feed. The throat is more like 9" and I have yet to get any branches caught in it. I chip the entire tree. The hydro setting can be set to a very slow speed allowing larger material to be feed in and not clog up the unit. I went with a local dealer (for parts, etc). I looked at both the Valby and Patu. Both look like great machines. I would choose based on dealer and each machines options and features.

The Salsco 826 is an excellent unit. The only option is feed sensing which is about $620 extra. What it does is monitor the RPM of the chipping disc and if (when chipping larger diameter material) the unit starts getting slowed down when it dropps to a preset rpm it will stop the feed wheel and let the trator/chipper recover and then restart the feed wheel. What happens is the wood rachets it's what through the chipper with out the need for you to constantly operate the feed bar. You can do it your self without the feed sensor but it (feed sensor) is a whole lot more efficeint then you or I and it never gets distracted. You may also want to consider an extra blade pkg. (knives, and hardware) The Bearcat 8/9" chipper is a good unit as well. And yes a 8" branch will not go thru the Salsco, but many limbs in the 6" catagory with crotches and branches will feed through the Salsco unit and not the Bearcat. The Salco unit has a much stronger feed system with more bite. In addition the Salsco unit has a 12" wide throat and two bed knives compared to 8" or 9" and one bed knife on the Bearcat. Overall construction is considerably stronger on the Salsco. I know a number of Salsco dealers that also sell (or at least carry or can get) the Bearcat/Woods unit. They sell many more Salsco units then the Bearcat/woods unit. I believe Keats equipment is your closest dealer. He has the 826 (or did yesterday anyhow) with feed sensing in stock. If you wanted it without feed sensing He can get it quickly for you. Chapple is also a dealer. hope that helps

Your assement is very interesting and enlightening. What kinda of $$ are we talking about between the 8" Bearcat and the 826 Salsco? Would a tractor with 33 pto hp handle these units ok?

I had gone up to Keats yesterday and talked to the dealer about the specs and price. The price was easy but we could not determine what the ideal PTO HP would be to power the unit. The info that you have given me is very practical IE; the extra knives I believe that the feed sensor is a great idea, very pricey for electronics, but probably very much worth it.

Here's a quick update. I traded in my Patu for a Salsco 824 and finally got a chance to use it this past weekend. It works great. What a difference the feeder makes. I was able to get done in 30 minutes what would have take at least twice as long before.

My dealer did warn me that the 3PH on my B2910 struggles to lift the chipper, and we was right. I have to give it am extra heft by hand to get it to lift, even though the chipper weighs about 700lbs and gthe 3PH can lift 1300lbs at 24" behind the pins. I guess the center of gravity is further back than it seems.

Wouldn't it be helpfull if implement manufacturers specified the '24" behind the lift point eqivalent weight' so we could figure out what can be lifted and what cannot since that's how the lift capacity of the tractors is specified? It would be pretty simple to do.
