push button p.t.o. engagement

Unlike another L5740 owner who posted above, my L5740 engagement is abrupt. It is a multiple wet disk clutch with electro-hydraulic control. Push the button, hydraulic flow goes to the spring disengaged clutch and pushes the plates together. I start my mower at low idle and bring it up. If I do want a very easy engagement I have the foot clutch that controls all power flow from the engine to the back end so I can feather that but I find the push button at low idle is smooth enough.

Is kubota the only mfg. That has a foot clutch on a hydro tractor?

Yesterday, I test-drove a Bobcat CT225, and it had a foot clutch for the PTO. I assume the others in the CT2XX line are the same.

Some manufacturers have it both ways and different models have a clutch while others don't. Left and right brake pedals also change within a single brand depending on model. It would be nice if tractor controls were standardized at least to the level that automobiles are, but that's a pipe dream.

Looks like if I buy a tractor with no foot clutch I had better replace the shear pin with a slipclutch, just to make it easier on the tractor pto, probably should do it no matter what.

Well, after spending the day with my Bush Hog, it was not as gentle a start as I had with my old manual tractor. I started it at a low idle, but it still gives a pretty good jolt. I use really soft shear bolts and didn't break any, so it must not be too bad.

That was my impression also.. No sheared bolts, but I could have started it smoother with a clutch... But we ain't got no stinking clutch:laughing: It seems Ok, and it sure is convenient.

Well as I look for a tractor, since rotary mowing is something it will be doing alot, may have to put a plus in the comparison column of the tractor that has a clutch that can be used to feather the pto in, just won't be a deal breaker.

The Massey's have an electric over hydraulic clutch for the PTO also, but their fancier tractorss have a "modulation" button so you can control the flow of the hydraulic oil to the PTO clutch plates for a smooth start with high inertia devices like a rotary cutter.. the Kioti works fine, it is just I could do it a little smoother by feathering a clutch. But it is not bad.

Haven't looked at Masseys what models have that feature in the 50 hp range. Just read on the Mahindra forum of a 3035 breaking the pto shear pin when engaging a rotarymower. My main concern would be if hard on the tractor pto system if it is that abrupt. Two of the tractors I am looking at now have the electric engagement

All I can say is no broken shear pins here.. it is abrupt, but it is not like a big bang.
