Push Mowers, Battery Vs. gas

The Ryobi 40v 21 inch "crosscut" mower has gas power. Great mower. So much easier to trim with because it's lighter than the beastly gas powered stuff. So much easier to pull back on a slope. The crosscut is a self propelled mower. You can get the 21 inch and a 20 inch Ryobi in push, but why push when you can so easily get power? Just wish they'd give us a reverse. Would be so easy to do.

No belts, just motors for the wheels and for the blade.

It is not a budget mower. The crosscut is near $600, but the push ones are a bunch cheaper.

How's this working? Getting to that time of year again and the offers are starting to come in, plus they've now added the 10% Vet discount.

Both of my gas push mowers are giving me fits. Run one time, not the next, carbs, plugs, filters, whatever. I'll muddle through this year, but I'll be watching the season end closeouts that should start before too long. I know everybody has their favorite and most hated brands, but I've had decent experiences so far with Ryobi. What I'm not sure of is between 40V and 80V that some brands offer.

And I don't understand package pricing. I see one package with a 21" mower, string trimmer and one charge and battery for $400, but I also see a mower with battery and charger for $250 and a trimmer with battery and charger for $150 which means I could get the mower, trimmer, two batteries and two chargers for the same $400.


But I'm still not convinced battery mowers have the guts of gassers for taller grass. I use the two riders and SCUT for most everything, so the battery pusher would just be for trimming smaller areas.

I have no experience with battery mowers, but plenty with gas mowers. I had the same problem as you until I started using ethanol free gas after my last carburetor replacement. The fuel is expensive, but I only use about 20 gallons per season.

We went from a mostly free market economy to almost complete central planning over the course of a year.

From freedom to chose where and how much to work to you could work or not based on decisions made by the central planners. From you could travel where and when to strict control on who could travel and where and when determined by the central planners.

Unless we rid ourselves of the central planners get ready for extreme shortages and high inflation akin to Venezuela. It’s the natural result of the central planners. At least for the masses, never for themselves.

On top of that, I just got a postcard in the mail for 18 months no interest on $1,000, so I'd have a year and a half to pay for it all.

I don't really need another string trimmer since I already have one (not the carbon shaft though), but it's essentially free in the package, as is the blower. I could sell those and make some of my money back.

Piecing it together with EGo tools at Lowes I find similar for $1406. But you don’t have to take what you do not want.

$599 for the mower with 56v 7.5 Ah battery.
$369 for 18” chainsaw and 5.0 Ah battery.
$299 for combo string trimmer and blower with (1) 2.5 Ah battery
$139 for hedge trimmer w/o battery.
(3) chargers

The 5.0 Ah battery is very useful in the lawnmower. All EGo batteries fit all EGo tools but the 5 and 7.5 are very heavy once you have tried the 2.5.

When comparing battery tools do not stop think after you see voltage. Voltage times amp-hours is the work capacity. 56 X 7.5 = 420 Wh. Is reasonable to assume all brushless electric motors are equally efficient +- the marketing lie factor.

Got all that plus a 48v Ryobi ZT. Just removed the blades/motors today and sharpened the blades. Ended up with a spring that dropped down from somewhere. Have no idea where it goes.

Both battery chargers have internal fans and are kind of noisy.

Got 2 6AH and 2 4AH batteries, plus the one 4AH I got with the trimmer last fall, so I should be good for a few tasks in a day.

This trimmer is the carbon fiber shaft and the one I already have is the standard version. I'll have to try them out to see which I'll prefer for the attachments tasks.

Yet they have a 1500PSI pressure washer with two 6Ah batteries and rapid charger for $499

Basically buy two 6Ah batteries and Rapid charger and get the pressure washer free.

They're also doing a post hole digger/auger with 8" diameter bit (Tool only) for $319, or $349 with 4Ah battery and charger, so for $30 you get $198 value battery and charger.

Always have been leery of one person augers due to the potential wrist, rib and hip damage of the gas versions if they bind. Kind of wonder if the battery version has some kind of safety ... the drills and saws will stop under heavy load.

That is why I bought an EGo Backpack Blower. Came with 7.5AH battery and the fast charger (vs slow charger) for less than the battery alone.
