I agree with joelD. Sparks be darned, lots of bar oil and lean on the saw Get it cut the way you want it to fall then quit about half way and lean on'em with the dozer

Had my first scary tree experience with the Bota not long after I bought it. About a 16"-18" caliper wild cherry say 55-65' tall that had just recently died. Pushed down low and moved the canopy about 3 feet and saw the soil around the trunk flexing. Got the bright idea to put it in 4wd and raise the bucket about 4' off the ground for more leverage. Had the BH on so it was biting good. It went over OK but it split that trunk clean through about 1' below the bucket. I had backed off maybe a foot and took a moderate stab at it. Second dumb idea. The only thing that saved me from wearing that tree was I had that tree canopy in motion away from me. When it snapped the bottom shot away too (the sound of it was something else) but not quite enough to to overtake the canopy motion. Almost did as it hung at near straight vertical for a second about 8 feet forward of where it all started, that seemed like an eternity. The center of the trunk only had about 1" of early rot. Still puzzles me that a little tractor could have generated enough power to snap it where it did. I only toy with pushing over very small trees now and only when I know a mistake won't be lethal. Lesson learned. There are a few out of the way dead pines around that gravity and time can take care of. I don't even like sawing them as they get a little silly when they hang-up in another tree.

I have some good photos somewhwere from back in england in the 80's when we were clearing 4-5ft oak stumps that had been clear felled....popping them out with gelignite and clearing with a D8..I'll try and find them..??

We have a very soft spongy,fast growing tree in Va,do not know the name,but it is a nuisanse tree that is murder on chainsaw blades. You can see the sparks flly off the chain while cutting. Needless to say, the chain dulls quickly. My soil is sandy. I am thinking the tree is pulling some of the sand into the tree truck.
